Re: Termination of volitional kamma

If anyone could help to explain the meaning of below passage ? Does it mean liberation only can be achieved if one can terminate all previous bad deeds done by experienced all the result ? Exactly so. Suttas are very clear about this (though it goes against commentaries). However, the question you ...

Re: Retrofuturist's Brief Sutta-Based Refutation of Abhidhamma

Matikas were the sources for the later Abhidhamma.
Yes. And then they started to live their own life, that's how Abhidhamma theory appeared.

Re: Can a monk tell his followers that he is not fully enlightened?

Is it likely that someone who's "crossed over beyond doubt" (vitiṇṇakankhā; tiṇṇavicikicchā) might be in doubt about it? From what I remember, suttas explain this (transcended) doubt as a doubt about what mental states are skillful and what are unskillful, but not every kind of doubt. Tak...

Re: Stream enterer have more than 7 times rebirth !

No. That sutta refers to an 8th bhava. Bhava does not mean "rebirth".
It doesn't mean rebirth as a process. But it does mean a lifetime.

Re: Stream enterer have more than 7 times rebirth !

I think in one sutta buddha said stream enterer taking 8th rebirth is 100% impossible .. he said openly..
Yes, it is impossible.
(He said that, for example, in Snp 2.1).

Re: Early Buddhism and the oral tradition

Are they? The last I checked those were around 1st century B.C, whereas the commentaries appear to be older than that. What I mean is that "ancient" doesn't automatically mean "correct". All early schools were equally ancient, but at times were very different in doctrine interpr...

Re: Early Buddhism and the oral tradition

Ven. Anālayo has shown that was is considered to be Aṭṭhakathā in Theravāda is actually directly incorporated into some āgamas in the northern canons. This gives some evidence towards the commentaries being quite old. There are probably a lot of suttas with commentary in them that we just can't det...

Re: Early Buddhism and the oral tradition

Usually, reliance on the commentaries is justified through a shorter gap in time between them and the historical Buddha than us, hence it is assumed that their understanding is probably closer to the original meaning or less distorted. Time begets gaps and gaps beget mediums. This is a poor argumen...

Re: Early Buddhism and the oral tradition

The endless interpretations of written texts sheds doubts on the authenticity of oral tradition. Not really. It sheds doubts on so called "Commentaries" and all that kind of later works. It seems like ancient monks lost the right explanation of certain Dhamma aspects very soon after Buddh...

Re: Did this modern Russian God create an early Buddhist commune in Siberia???

Some long time ago we had a religious tour to Thai with a Vessarion follower. She tried to proselytize among monks, that was something :D

Re: Are the Jhānas the Buddha learned from his teachers before enlightenment the same as the ones he taught after it?

Although, certainly the jhana that he practiced as a child must be special and unique, for him to remark it as being a breakthrough in his search for awakening, upon memory of it. It seems he has not been in contact with that jhanic state since childhood. It was neither special nor unique. Just ord...

Re: Are the Jhānas the Buddha learned from his teachers before enlightenment the same as the ones he taught after it?

The Buddha discovered jhana by himself, he did not learn it from his teachers. Not really. He indeed entered the 1st jhana spontaneously in his childhood, however, many other ascetics mastered jhanas too (as several suttas mention). What he did though, is that he resystematized lowest 4 meditative ...
