Re: When was the Tipitaka Written?
Hello Pelletboy, Overview of Tipitaka Scriptures - Narada Maha Thera "This doctrine is profound, hard to see, difficult to understand, calm, sublime, not within the sphere of logic, subtle, to be understood by the wise." Majjhima Nikaya The Buddha has passed away, but the sublime Teaching...

When was the Tipitaka Written?
When was the Tipitaka written? I think I read that it was written centuries after the Buddha's demise yet there was mention of scriptures at the time of the Buddha in the Tipitaka itself. It said that one accomplished in the practical application of the Dhamma like attaining arhatship was better tha...

Re: Forbidden Woman
Yo0u just can't discount that sex is a major part of the joys of the 6 sense heavens and the human realm. Its one of the main good points in the dhamma that reveals to people that many forms of premarital sex are not sin unlike Christianity which suffocates this aspect of life that would give many p...

Re: Forbidden Woman
Are women engaged to be married part of the list of Forbidden Women you can't have sex with? I read in one list that one "earmarked since birth" is a forbidden women? Does this count if she was engaged later in life yet not yet married? In another list it doesn't state an engaged woman as...

Re: Forbidden Woman
Even a prostitute that has been paid for by another man is off limits- you are taking his temporary lover- what more to say of stealing someone's bethrothed. Still, a prostitute is said to be a "temporary wife" and why is there a difference between being married and engaged if there is no...

Your Own Reason
Did the Awakened One ever said this: "“Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense."? It was posted in a Theravadin Facebook page I'm not sire about its accuracy. See http://www.f...

Re: Dhamma's View on Zodiac
What's the Dhamma's view on Zodiac? In some scriptures they say that looking at the stars for luck is not effective for luck is its own luck. Then in the Jatakas it says that a Bodhisatta can be evil as when he was reborn as a thief because of his Zodiac. Hello pelletboy, Can you give traceable lin...

Re: What is a "World System"?
From what I know, its the 31 planes right from the lowest hell to the highest heaven of neither perception not non-perception. This is a vertical set up. The other realms that stretch out left to right are other world systems that also have 31 planes of existence.

Re: Worldly "Rewards" of the Universe
Those "rewards" are characteristic of all Buddhas as they come to their last life so it does seem that the universe is "rewarding" them for their stature. The sources are found in most Buddhist sites talking about the story of the Buddha from his birth to his achievement of Buddh...

Conspire with the Universe to Sin
It is said that a bodhisatta in his last life has a horse or elephant as a chief means of transport. It is part of the things that is given by the universe by his perfection of practicing his paramis. Thinking about this, does the universe conspire the would be horse/elephant to sin to be born as an...

Worldly "Rewards" of the Universe
Why are there so many worldly things attributed to the birth of a Buddha(music by devas as he is conceived, a cheif horse or elephant as means for transport, wife, child, etc.) if in the Dhamma music is seen as a stunbling block, wife and child as snares, transport as possessions? Why are they "...

Re: How do Bodhisattas Get Started?
Sounds more like a topic for http://www.dharmawheel.net" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, the Mahayana sister site. Mahayana has different tenets, key ones at that, than Theravada. My question is directed at how bodhisattas in the Theravadin sense get started. I'm also not t...

Re: Do you know the story of the mystery photo?
Interesting, if it is supposed to be the real image of the Awakened One. Isn't the Awakened One supposed to be bald? Why are his images even in the statues in Thailand and in this picture have some sort of hair?

Why is 6th Sense Pleasure (Mental) not Included?
Why is mental sense pleasure not included in the following warning by the Awakened One?: "Monks, there are these five strings of sensuality. Which five? Forms cognizable via the eye — agreeable, pleasing, charming, endearing, fostering desire, enticing. Sounds cognizable via the ear — agreeable...
