Re: What experiences Nirvana?

Nirodha-samāpatti is the experience of final nibbāna whilst still alive. Note that it is the only meditative attainment without a corresponding realm after death the corresponding realm is Nirvana After the death of an arahant there is no longer any corresponding, no reference points what so ever.

Re: What experiences Nirvana?

I feel that death is actually pretty close to Parinibbana for those that have not experienced it. there is no stress in Nirvana hence it's not boring, nor difficult Imagine if all your limbs have been chopped off and you still live. It is certainly unpleasant but will you stress on account of it? I...

Excellent idea, tracking dhamma practice with a spreadsheet just like how you track your finance. We need more of this type of transparent approach to tracking and measuring dhamma practice.

Re: Non-delight

I dont think that it is possible to delight without attachement. If one delight in senses - one delight in senses... Can you please give an exemple of delight without attachnent? Sure--I can give you all you want. For example, I always delight upon the experience of a sunrise or sunset: the experie...

Re: Clarification of not-self and 'the doer'

There is no ego or identity, but you still own your actions, and you are the one that will feel the effect and consequences of those actions. Suffering still exists regardless of your view of an identity or not. I agree with the above. In my first post on this topic I supported the notion of I am t...

Re: Clarification of not-self and 'the doer'

"And, yes, I think whatever thought I want to think, and don't think any thought I don't want to think. I will any resolve I want to will, and don't will any resolve I don't want to will. I have attained mastery of the mind with regard to the pathways of thought. - Vassakara Sutta You very much hav...

Re: Clarification of not-self and 'the doer'

Yes, "(3) I am not the owner of my actions" does make sense. You are not the owner of your actions because it too is dependent on conditions. Your choices, your supposedly "free will" is very much dependent and falls within the domain of this mass of conditional aggregates, which is not "you". This...

Re: Clarification of not-self and 'the doer'

So do you think that "I am the owner of my actions" and "I am not the owner of my actions" are both true & false, depending on perspective? If so, that sounds like wrong view to me. Perhaps you are right, but do you have any sutta references for this view? As I see it, your argument ultimately hing...

Re: Clarification of not-self and 'the doer'

If, as you say, Yes, "(3) I am not the owner of my actions" does make sense. You are not the owner of your actions because it too is dependent on conditions. then why is "I am the owner of my actions" recommended by the Buddha as skillful right-view? Just different perspectives. I am the owner as i...

Re: Clarification of not-self and 'the doer'

If the reflection is changed as below, nothing really changes: This nama-rupa (mind-body) is the owner of its actions, heir of its actions, actions are the womb (from which its state has sprung), actions are its relations, actions are its protection. Whatever actions it will do, good or bad, of the...

Re: Clarification of not-self and 'the doer'

The latter is Buddha dhamma. Then the bhikkhuni Vajira, having understood, “This is Mara the Evil One,” replied to him in verses: SN 5.10 the bhikkhuni is not Buddha …… The bhikkhuni overcome the assault of Mara using the Buddha dhamma. Though it's really your choice what you want to consider the B...

Re: Clarification of not-self and 'the doer'

Could someone clarify the meaning of the following excerpts: How do we parse that sentence, which explicitly states "I am the owner of my actions", compared to "In any act there is only the action but no one who acts. There is no doer, no subject by way of a living entity" the latter is like Advait...

Re: Clarification of not-self and 'the doer'

You are not the car, but it doesn't mean you don't control the car. ... Yes, but isn't this the tricky bit? What is this you that is separate from (in this simile) "the car"? :sage: Mike The "you" that seems to operate the five aggregates from our perspective of clinging, is not really in control o...

Re: Clarification of not-self and 'the doer'

Both statements emphasise conditionality from different perspectives. I am the owner of my actions - You take responsibility for your actions and are bounded to it's effects. "You" is subservient to cause and effect. In any act there is only the action but no one who acts. There is no doer, no subje...

Re: is lite jhana even jhana?

can I stop with lite jhana or should I put effort and develop hard jhana? From the previous post, it sounds like you have already achieved the so called hard jhanas anyway so lite jhanas should be easy, especially if you are measuring based on depth of concentration. However I feel the true measure...
