Re: Can a Buddhist drink alcohol in moderation?
That's the main issue, for me: did I intend, today, to follow the fifth precept? If I did, then I cannot later renege and decide to interpret the precept with a loose eye, but if for example there was a party or other social engagement (a faculty meeting, perhaps dinner with the boss) I would have t...

Time of day alters things significantly. I would meditate in the library, they keep rather broad hours on most days. Book a study room for yourself and use it.

Re: Tripataka for Theravada, like koran for Muslims?
He always ended his letters with the following two words: "Aslim, Taslam!". these two words are derived from the same infinitive Salama which is the root of Salam, i.e. ‘Peace’. "Aslim taslam" actually means "submit (to God) and be saved." Please note that all of these words share the root s-l-m as...

Re: Did Lord Buddha accept the authority or reject the vedas?
The Vedas, in the time of the Buddha, were being reformulated according to the Upanisads. These texts were giving a symbolic twist to Vedic ritual life such that the last quarter of ones life was spent as an eremite performing Vedic ritual in a purely meditative way, rather than physically. Two of t...

Re: Tripataka for Theravada, like koran for Muslims?
Actually, the word Islam is a verbal noun originating from the triliteral root s-l-m, and is derived from the Arabic verb salama, which means "to accept, surrender or submit." (per wiki) "Muslim" conjugates the same root to render the meaning "one who submits" (to the will of God). A similar idea in...

Hello MayaRefugee, I'm not aware of any such sutta. Can you please give a traceable link to it? with metta Chris I remember such a tale with these details: a king was demanding a monk to show his enlightenment or he'd cut off a hand or head or such, so when the monk said nothing the hand was cut of...

The dates are known to within a relatively short range, however, which isn't quite the same as being wholly uncertain.

Re: Happiness is chosen, not determined: research
On this note, a TED lecture by Dan Gilbert: here "Dan Gilbert believes that, in our ardent, lifelong pursuit of happiness, most of us have the wrong map. In the same way that optical illusions fool our eyes -- and fool everyone's eyes in the same way -- Gilbert argues that our brains systematically ...

Re: how much concentration/effort in mindfulness
In the Dhamma, sati is paying attention to something in a particular way- the satipatthana subjects, with the Anapanasati and Kayagatasati Suttas as guides, oughtn't to be summed up as "just paying attention".Spiny O'Norman wrote:Essentially mindfulness just means paying attention

In general terms I think I agree, though I'm puzzled about how anicca and anatta apply - they sound like "natural laws". Looking at "sabbe dhamma anatta", doesn't "dhamma" mean that all phenomena ? And with "sabbe sankhara anicca", doesn't "sankhara" mean any conditioned formation? The Dhamma is st...
