Re: Sahampati speaks from the jhana heavens
All devas and brahmas are just projections of the mind. They are real beings, not projections of the mind. But ancient ppl did not know this. They thought that the gods really exist. When a being is in human body, he is in the state of awake. When he dies, if he doesnt enter another body, then he i...

Re: Struggling With Samsara: How Rare Is A Human Birth?
You appear to be saying no people on the earth are killing & devouring each other. :| People, unlike beings of the three lower worlds, can hear the Dhamma, form right views, right intentions, right speech, right actions, right lifestyle, etc. Yes, that seems to be the point. In the animal realm...

Re: Struggling With Samsara: How Rare Is A Human Birth?
I was wondering how rare a human birth is? Can't remember another, so it really must be rare. seeing the expanding population on earth, I think its not that rare There are more insects that live on one square kilometer of the forest than all the people on the planet. The number of animals on Earth ...

Re: Struggling With Samsara: How Rare Is A Human Birth?
DooDoot, read MH12 in which it is written about the five types of birth. These are deva, manussa, tiraccha, petta and naraka.

Re: Struggling With Samsara: How Rare Is A Human Birth?
DooDoot , manussa is human, manussa-loka is the human world. In the sutta about the turtle, it is said that once in the lower worlds it will be difficult for fools to get out of there, because it is difficult to accumulate merit there, because there everyone kills and devours each other. And the fo...

Re: Struggling With Samsara: How Rare Is A Human Birth?
Manussa in Pali is just a human, and not a human with any special qualities. Manussa (p. 520) Manussa Manussa [fr. manus, cp. Vedic manuṣya. Connected etym. with Goth. manna=man] a human being, man. The popular etym. connects m. with Manu(s), the ancestor of men, e. g. KhA 123: "Manuno apaccā t...

Re: Struggling With Samsara: How Rare Is A Human Birth?
Obviously the above ignores the suttas i posted. The conclusions are far-fetched, due to a lack of understanding of the context. I have read them. They do not appear to support your point of view. They literally say the human status occurs due to realising the Four Noble Truths. They do not say the...

Re: Brahmacariya Breach
Hi All, I am a lay person but intend to live out the remainder of my life in celibacy - whether I ordain or not. I am not soliciting opinions about whether or not a lay person should live a celibate life etc... My dilemma is this: I recently had a breach of the vow. I'll spare you the details, but ...

Re: Sahampati speaks from the jhana heavens
If Brahma Sahampati is a deity from the heaven of the fourth dhyana, how does he speak to Gautama Buddha? I realize this might seem like a silly question, but I was under the impression that the deities born of the heavens of the dhyanas are lacking in certain gross features of mind -- sometimes ev...

Re: Struggling With Samsara: How Rare Is A Human Birth?
Therefore, the "human state" appears to refer to living by the Dhamma; which is obviously something "rare". The impression is the "human state" is not the same as being a "homo sapien". Somewhere, the Commentaries say the word "manussā" ("human...

Re: What is formations? (A streamenterer dont crave for formations)?
Sankhara is a polysemantic word. In the explanation of paticcasamuppada, it means the intentional actions of body, speech and mind, leading to the formation of vinnana and nama-rupa in future birth (therefore they are referred to as formative). Sankharakkhandha is a collection of numerous mental co...

Re: Where are everybody?
Why 2012? Centuries after the Buddha's parinibbana, there were already pessimistic sentiments that the Arahants were no longer there, that no one was reaching jhana anymore, that the sangha was immersed in luxury, and that fruitless doctrinal disputes were leading to multiple divisions, and so on. A...
