Re: Bhikkhuni Ordination performed - by Ajahn Brahmavamso

This is an important time for us as practitioners, to see just how far reaching and detrimental the effects of a schism are on the Sasana at large. This is an important lesson in harmony. Events are playing out before our very eyes and history is being written. The whole world suffers because of th...

Re: About the fifth Śīla

No hell, just lower rebirth (if you believe that literally). Makes one wonder, you wouldn't drink the wine that was corked, but a lower rebirth is not as off-putting, it seems... Then again for us Mahayanists it's not a problem - they need Bodhisattvas in the lower realms even more! Or back to huma...

Re: Where to put the statue

Alternatively, you could get a Japanese altar with folding doors and place the Buddha Rupa inside. Open the doors only when you pray and pay respect.

This might be an expensive option.

Yes, but I was referring to the 227 rules.

Mike

As fas as I know, it's not listed in the Patimokkha.

Re: Where to put the statue

The reason I asked whether it was appropriate to put a rupa in the bedroom, is because perhaps it may be offending to the Buddha as one takes one's clothes off in front of the rupa? This reminds me of my university days ... When I was a university student, I lived in a small bedroom of the student ...

Re: Poll: Are you vegetarian/vegan?

I don't vote because to me, it's a non-issue! I consider myself as a sensible eater, I eat sensibly to keep my body healthy enough to practice the Dhamma, and the diet varies according to my own daily activities. Normally, I east mostly vegetables, fruits, and a bit of meat (read & white mea...

Re: About the fifth Śīla

If I remember correctly, the Samyutta Nikaya mentioned one exceptional case: Sarakani, the Sakyan, had been a heavy drinker for most of his life until the time of his death. And yet, after his death, the Buddha declared that Sarakani attained the state of Stream-Enterer. Any comment?

Re: Great Brahma

Maybe not any old "Great Brahma" per se, as in the Vedic Brahma. Typically, the Brahma worshipped in Thailand appears to be the Brahma Sahampati. This is borne out by the kathas used to honour him, particularly at Bangkok's Wat Erawan and those projects consecrated by the monks of Wat Sakae. The Ve...

Yes, I'm aware of various Suttas which talk about this issue. It just seemed strange that it wasn't so explicitly in the Pāṭimokkha rules.

Thanks, Winny. Borobudur should be included in the list. It is recognized by UNESCO in their World Heritage List.
