Re: Thought and examination (Vitakka and Vicara) after composure?

Unless one's already enlightened, no matter how learned s/he is, there'll always be blind spots in their understanding of the Dhamma. Is it possible to provide what exact point that venerable disagrees with the Suttas to help with the discussion?

Re: Bases of liberation. Which Sutta?

No English translation available on accesstoinsight or suttacentral. But they're the same as the Five Faculties of the 37 Bodhipakkhiyā Dhammās. So basically the sutta's message was that while it's a very important "raft" to get one to the other shore but eventually it will need to be let ...

Re: A question about the 1-life model

Of course there's no difference. As already mentioned, the 1-life model is in no way meant to reject the concept of rebirth. And so rebirth is still rebirth whether it's 3-life or 1-life. The only difference is the grouping to make it a bit clearer in context to the 4 NT, as pointed out by Dr. Santi...

Re: A question about the 1-life model

He also heavily criticizes the idea of morality in the book. This looks like atheist / secular buddhism... If that's the case, that guy wouldn't even qualify to be called an atheist or secular Buddhist, for even they would not criticize the idea of morality. And what is wrong view? 'There is nothin...

Re: What is the difference between infinite consciousness and the consciousness of the five aggregate?

A "tranquillized consciousness" migth potentially has some misleading connotation. It's more like "bright and pure", as described in another thread here. And since it's bright and pure, it sets up the Arupa stage, sort of the opening to the dimension of infinite consciousness.

Re: What is the difference between infinite consciousness and the consciousness of the five aggregate?

Is that because perception and feeling also a part of consciousness? Then question still remain for Rupa? If we look at the sequence of meditation from the 4 Rupa jhanas to the 4 ARupa attainments as processes for tranquilizing/harmonizing their respective domains, then it should address the questi...

Re: A question about the 1-life model

How is rebirth explained in that model ? I know rebirth is not dealt with in the 1-life model itself but I suppose there is a separate understanding of how rebirth works in a 1-life model context. Or is this part of secular buddhism and those following it do not believe in rebirth ? There're 2 ways...

Re: Thai Theravadin monks and money

And from a moral point of view, how to justify such donations when nothing seems to be given in return (unless I have missed something)? The act of giving alone, regardless of whether the recipient is a monk or a regular person, already bring tremendous merits to the giver. At a minimum, s/he has p...

Re: Is it biologically possible to breath other than your lungs?

Is it biologically possible for human to breath other than your lungs? First the question needs to be framed with the exact context and be accurate to the details. For example, if we ask the question: "Is it possible for human to breathe other than using our lungs perpetually, meaning not only...

Re: Do you find Sati, Sampajanna and Atappa in first Jhana?

It's a common misconception that mindfulness and serenity are 2 separate types of meditation. Ven. Thanissaro in his "The Path of Concentration & Mindfulness" explained: As the Buddha says, the fourth jhana — in which the body is filled with bright awareness — is the point where mindfu...

Re: Difference between Ekaggata and Samadhi and Sati and Manasi Karotha

Right, Samadhi and Ekaggata are pretty much the same in the narrowest sense. About the seemingly confusing issue, it'd help to notice that elements or attributes of Sati are naturally tied to Samadhi. One need to have YonisoManasikara/wise-attention to qualify for the fulfillment of SammaSati/right-...

Re: Difference between Ekaggata and Samadhi and Sati and Manasi Karotha

Welcome to DW! Ven. Gunaratana on Samadhi/Concentration and Ekaggata/One-Pointedness in his "The Jhanas" : ..the word Samadhi is used in the Pali literature on meditation with varying degrees of specificity of meaning. In the narrowest sense, as defined by Buddhaghosa, it denotes the parti...
