Here in the U.S. in 44 states (not Nevada, casinos don't want competition), the Powerball lottery jackpot is at a world record $1.4 billion.
Chances of winning with one ticket are 1 in 292.2 million. Long lines everywhere.
who wants to be a billionaire?
Re: who wants to be a billionaire?
I'm in a pool at work and will be buying a few personal tickets.
David, if I win, I will help fund a portion of the costs to run DW. I'm serious.
But you need to make me an admin. And I want my username to be yellow. I want my post count to be raised to 100,000. I want my own private forum, for drafting purposes. I want my PM message limit raised to 1 million messages. I'll let you know if there is anything else.

I knew two poor people won Lotto tickets.
One person is very poor selling leaves in the street. She became very proud after her winning. She died few months latter.
Another poor farmer win the Looto. His son bought a brand new car. Started drinking with his friends and lost all money.
I do not buy lotto tickets.

Re: who wants to be a billionaire?
At the hospital today, I heard two people near the cafeteria talking about a lottery pool for Powerball. After the one person departed, I started talking to the one who had initiated the conversation with the other person (who was obviously a doctor). She told me that the people going together to buy lottery tickets were all from surgery. I asked how many people were in the pool so far and she answered, "Fourteen".
I have always liked the idea of a group of people going together to buy lottery tickets. I love it when kitchen workers and/or maintenance staff wins and any group of hard-working people who don't reap much in the way of financial rewards. I fired off at her though, " Who is going to operate on all of us though if you all win?" I didn't do it with animosity, but with good-natured humor. It got me thinking though, with over a billion dollars up for grab, it might be better if just one or two people win it. Can you imagine what might happen to say a hospital unit if they win that amount of money? What about a school if a bunch of their staff wins? A nursing/rehab facility? Maybe, some would stay, but many would leave, especially the ones that have been around the longest and have the most experience. A huge whole might need to be filled somewhere.
So, I have decided someone like me needs to win. I don't work. I don't have much to contribute to the world and this would allow me to support Buddhist and charitable institutions. I would of course, have to give some to certain family members and I would want to buy a house, mind you just a small one with a porch that has a rocking chair and a glider or swing, a house that has a tiny yard but still a sanctuary for wildlife and lots of flowers. I don't need a car since I can't see well enough to drive. Of course, I would help all of my friends out. You are all my friends aren't you? So, just send all of your energy to sattva/louise that I might win. I knew I could count on all of you! Thank you for your support!

Sounds reasonable. I'll also recommend you receive a raise of your current DW salary by 100 percent.SDC wrote:I'm in a pool at work and will be buying a few personal tickets.

Jackpot is now up to $1.5 billion, nearly $1.0 billion if you take the lump sum cash payment instead of the annuity.

I live in Las Vegas so I don't gamble (dangerous mix to live here and have a gambling habit), but I do make an exception for a few tickets when the jackpot is this high. My wife and I drove to the stateline of California and the wait was about 4 hours so we drove further to the next town where the wait was only about 30 minutes.

Thanks sattva , I particularly like the "bottom line" in the article you shared:sattva wrote:This is what they are saying:Bundokji wrote:I am wondering how much the amount will be after tax

The bottom line
If you’re lucky enough to become a really big lottery winner, please take my advice: hire a super-competent tax pro, a super-competent attorney, and a super-competent financial adviser the next day. Then don’t do anything with your money until you’ve talked to all three. That way, your big jackpot will be a blessing instead of a curse.

David you are very successful in your real estate enterprise. It would take great financial discipline to wisely use the winnings from a lottery.
Healthy encounters my friend.

Re: who wants to be a billionaire?
It seems to me, in the United States, if you won 1.5 billion, there would be about 300 million people trying to take advantage of you and your money, sounds like a nightmare to me.
18 years ago I made one of the most important decisions of my life and entered a local Cambodian Buddhist Temple as a temple boy and, for only 3 weeks, an actual Therevada Buddhist monk. I am not a scholar, great meditator, or authority on Buddhism, but Buddhism is something I love from the Bottom of my heart. It has taught me sobriety, morality, peace, and very importantly that my suffering is optional, and doesn't have to run my life. I hope to give back what little I can to the Buddhist community, sincerely former monk John
