Of course it's bad... It has negative expected value and the return on investment is often negative 50+%. Probably the worst form of gambling and is worse than slot machines when it comes to the ROI. In other words it is like giving away money.

Indeed, thinking of buying a lottery ticket as an investment is delusional.

It's not ethically bad imo, but it's sort of an "idiot tax", given the unlikelihood of success. Your money would probably be better spent investing in cryptocurrency.

much better to donate the money you were going to gamble to charity, takes out the middleman.
18 years ago I made one of the most important decisions of my life and entered a local Cambodian Buddhist Temple as a temple boy and, for only 3 weeks, an actual Therevada Buddhist monk. I am not a scholar, great meditator, or authority on Buddhism, but Buddhism is something I love from the Bottom of my heart. It has taught me sobriety, morality, peace, and very importantly that my suffering is optional, and doesn't have to run my life. I hope to give back what little I can to the Buddhist community, sincerely former monk John

The Buddha talks about gambling in DN 33 (Venerable Narada translation):
"There are, young householder, these six evil consequences in indulging in gambling:

(i) the winner begets hate,
(ii) the loser grieves for lost wealth,
(iii) loss of wealth,
(iv) his word is not relied upon in a court of law,
(v) he is despised by his friends and associates,
(vi) he is not sought after for matrimony; for people would say he is a gambler and is not fit to look after a wife.
I know the few times I bought a lottery ticket in the past, a great deal of fantasizing, agitation, and clinging would arise. Those things suffice as a warning to stay away.
