Any other Black people on Dhammawheel?

Post by LG2V »

I'm curious, because:

a.) I'm the only Black buddhist who I personally know, save for one woman who I met at a Nichiren info session nearly 8 years ago

and

b.) I'd like to meet more, discuss dhamma and integrate it with our specific cultural issues.

Also, I made a cool new forum: https://ebonyloka.com. Check it out and join if you have free time. I figured here would be a good place to look for new members.

(Forgive me if my advertisement comes off as tacky)

Greetings LG2V,

I'll try to keep this site in mind for when I think there's a suitable opportunity to refer people through to it.

Good luck.

Metta,
Paul. :)

Good luck with the forum. You might want to advertise it at the Africana Buddhists facebook group:

Thanks a ton Dr. S. This is exactly the sort of group that I've been looking to reach out to.

By the way I do not like the title of the group.
It sounds very un-Buddhist.
This sound like an exclusive club.
The ultimate aim of Buddhist teaching is to eliminate all measurements. (Mana)
Thanks Sarath!

I've thought about the site being a potentially tacky move. Here's my basic reasoning for going ahead with its creation. I think that African-Americans in particular base our group identity on race, rather than language or nationality, due to our particular history as a part of America's multiracial, mostly monolingual society. It's the biggest, and arguably most impactful, influence on our collective experience. So, for an African-American, "Black" is construed to have a similar meaning as a Haitian's "Haitian", or a Kenyan's "Swahili". Most of the time, one can just make a forum in a certain language or with a certain country domain, and attract friends and family without such obvious declarations.

With that being said, the title is mostly to attract people who share similar experiences for a productive culturally-rooted dialogue. I still link to other dhamma sites from there because dhamma is good in general. Everyone's welcome to join as well.

The overcoming of māna - conceit or pride - is clearly one of the ultimate aims of Dhamma practice. However, māna appears to have no relevance to the activity of organising forums for particular interest groups. Forums exist for people interested in different types of Buddhism, speakers of different languages, people in different countries, and so on. At times it is helpful to be able to discuss issues with someone of similar background. At other times it is helpful to learn from people with different backgrounds.
