Odd question for Kiwi friends

Why would a plane have this flight path?

Yes. SOFIA has been coming here for several years, and there was an earlier version (Kuiper) before that.

The telescope only has up-down control:

So they have to design the flight path to do the left-right pointing...

They fly in the Northern and Southern winters. Since the US uses NZ for it's Antarctic operations, it's natural for SOFIA to be here as they already have the infrastructure.

Retro, just out of interest, what were you browsing aircraft flight tracks for? How did you come across this?

Just passing through and checked out the twitter link. There's a photo of a huge US plane being refueled on flight, described as from Air Mobility Command at Dover AFB. I live about 10 miles from that base; the huge C5's shoot landings every Wednesday and they fly right over my house at a very low altitude. They're so big that on slow approach they look like they're barely moving and going to drop right out of the sky. It's hard to describe how immense those things look when they're right over your head. Also loud.
