Re: Dharma Talks or Videos
Can anyone recommend Youtube channels or podcasts similar to that of the deceased Bhikkhu Samahita?
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRGyK7 ... KQwrwu2B9A
Or put in another way: If you also enjoy(ed) his channel, what else do you like and recommend?
Thanks!

A Dhamma talk session from Ashin Sarana, a Czech Republic Theravada monk.
To my surprise, he can speak Sinhalese and Burmese too.

Re: Dharma Talks or Videos
Just sharing what I listened recently, topic related to rebirth and conception.
It is a Dhamma sermon delivered by the late Ven K Sri Dhammananda Mahanayaka Thera, the late Chief Abbot of Buddhist Maha Vihara Temple (an authoritative Theravada representative in the country) from Malaysia. As indicated by the temple name, it is of Theravada tradition and held Pali Tipitaka.

The video sounds wrong when saying a Non-Returner is free from attachment to the non-sensual pleasure of jhana or the pleasure of the Buddha's qualities. The lower fetter is sensual desire rather than non-sensual desire.Dhammavamsa wrote: ↑Tue Jun 15, 2021 3:02 pm A Dhamma talk session from Ashin Sarana, a Czech Republic Theravada monk.

Possibly this young monk can learn from a senior monk:AN 10.13 wrote:What are the five lower fetters?

Bhikkhu Buddhadasa wrote:The next defilement, the sixth of the fetters, is desire for the bliss associated with the various stages of concentration on forms (rupa - raga). The first three grades of Aryian are still not capable of giving up attachment to the bliss and tranquillity obtainable by concentrating deeply on forms, but they will succeed in doing so when they move up to the last stage, that of the Arahant. The fully concentrated state has a captivating flavor, which can be described as a foretaste of Nirvana. Though it differs from real Nirvana, it has more or less the same flavor. While one is fully concentrated, the defilements are dormant; but they have not evaporated away entirely, and will reappear as soon as concentration is lost. As long as they are dormant, however, the mind is empty, clear, free, and knows the flavor of real Nirvana. Consequently this state can also become a cause of attachment.
The seventh subtle defilement is desire for the bliss associated with full concentration on objects other than forms (arupa - raga). It resembles the sixth fetter, but is one degree more subtle and attenuated. Concentration on an object such as space or emptiness yields a tranquillity and quiescence more profound than concentration on a form, with the result that one becomes attached to that state. No Arahant could ever become fascinated by any state of pleasant feeling whatsoever, regardless of where it originated, because an Arahant is automatically aware of the impermanence, unsatisfactoriness and nonselfhood of every state of feeling. Other hermits and mystics practicing concentration in the forest do not perceive the hidden danger in these blissful states and so become fascinated by and attached to the flavor of them just as immature people become attached to the flavor of sensual objects. For this reason the Buddha used the same word "desire" for both cases. If you think this subject over and really come to understand it, you will be full of admiration and respect for these individuals called Aryians.

There is always an official executioner. If you try to take his place, It is like trying to be a master carpenter and cutting wood. If you try to cut wood like a master carpenter, you will only hurt your hand.

He speaks Burmese quite well. Around 60-90 % of native fluency depending upon context, imo.
Description to the video:
- Ashin Sarana explains the basic differences between the four levels of Enlightenment. There are many more, this is only the basic from the Pali scriptures. Unfortunately, even with the detailed descriptions for each level of Enlightenment, there are still many disputes, misunderstandings, and misconceptions regarding these attainments. People who attained the first or second level sometimes think they haven't attained it, which we know already from the Buddha's time (see Mahanama Sutta https://suttacentral.net/sn55.21/en/s... ). Much more often are the cases when people think they have attained a level of Enlightenment but later themselves find out that didn't attain anything. An Arahant, however, always knows he is an Arahant... Unfortunately, more often people think they are Arahants and later they find out that they are not.
Note for clarification - The craving for jhana is abandoned by the third level of Enlightenment, i.e., an Anagami when he/she is on the verge to become an Arahant. First, one needs to be an Anagami - and some Anagamis have jhanas and oftentimes have an attachment, craving for them. However, as they are going to become Arahants they need to abandon all of their attachment to jhanas so that they can become Arahants. ...
I agree with him, and (to personally capture the meaning he would like to convey by the passage) I would like to re-word the sentence of: "The craving for jhana is abandoned by the third level of Enlightenment" as ...
- "The craving for jhana needs to be successfully abandoned at the third level of Enlightenment, of course, to enter the arahanthood."

Re: Dharma Talks or Videos
The view in the video that a Non-Returner is free from attachment to the non-sensual pleasure of jhana is clearly a mistaken wrong view. Sutta was already quoted to demonstrate this.Dhammavamsa wrote: ↑Mon Jun 21, 2021 1:51 pm Lacking fear for mistakes and wrong views doesn't justify correctness.
I will take Hiri Otappa seriously.
Sorry but your attempt to reword the bhikkhu does not change the error of the bhikkhu. Only an Arahant is free from attachment to the pleasure of jhana.Sabbe_Dhamma_Anatta wrote: ↑Mon Jun 21, 2021 2:25 pm I agree with him, and (to personally capture the meaning he would like to convey by the passage) I would like to re-word the sentence of: "The craving for jhana is abandoned by the third level of Enlightenment" as ...

Re: Dharma Talks or Videos
Many of the audios and videos found in this page are the result of Luangpor Dhammavuddho’s thousands of hours of study and practice of the Buddha’s Words found in the Sutta and Vinaya.
https://vbgnet.org/audio-video-dhamma-talks/
You will find introductory Dhamma talks in english, Advanced Dhamma talks in english and all the Nikayas read outloud and then explained in english. But there is a little manglish in there too, because everything said is simply true lah!
No Buddha statues, no personality cult, everything is based on the Suttas in the 4 Nikayas (and very few books from the minor collection) and the vinaya. All the contradictions found in the abhidhamma, visuddhimagga, vipassana meditation, mahayana and tibetan buddhism compared to the Buddha's original teaching found in the Suttas/Vinaya are also explained.
Become a Sāvaka (hearer/listener) of the Buddha's original teaching and do all the work yourself. No need for a world renowned monk with a huge following or monks who are more interested in later methods of meditation and the later books/teachings.
Lay people can become a sotāpanna just by listening, no need for meditation for the first stage. There are several instances in the Suttas mentioned by Luangpor Dhammavuddho that verify that this is possible…
I listen everyday!

He says it's necessary to listen the true Dhamma with focused attention. Good to know sila and samadhi are helpful but not a necessary condition for stream entry. Bad to know that there is also a fake dhamma among us...
Thanks for sharing these talks.

Faith and Belief in Buddhism
Among all the modern contemporary monks, be it Theravada or not, I have the most confidence for this Venerable Sir, the Chief Monk Bhante Dr. K Sri Dhammananda Mahanayaka Thera (Deceased). Through his book "What Buddhist Believe" I start to know what Buddhism really is. Definitely recommended.
Hope it helps those who confused about faith issue ...
