I'm also interested in this question for Theravada in particular.

For Zen, a Zen practitioner that I respect recommended this center founded by Master Seung Sahn: http://www.dharmazen.com/index.htm I don't have any experience with it though.

Edit: I guess since I just dropped off my son there for a teen retreat a couple hours ago, I should mention http://deerparkmonastery.org which is in Thich Nhat Hanh's lineage (so drawing from both Zen and Pali suttas).

There are "Insight Meditation" centers (IMS/SRMC lineage) in LA, Santa Monica, Long Beach etc. The one in LA has main teacher Trudy Goodman (aka Mrs. Jack Kornfield). Not quite the same as bonafied monastics, to some peoples' taste, but "well-known", and that "tradition" tends to consider itself at least as good as monastics.

Edit: Some listed here http: http://www.insightmeditationcenter.org/links/

It would seem strange if Thanissaro B's Metta Monastery were the only Theravada outpost in Southern California, as up here in Northern California we've got multiple Thai, Burmese, and English-American (A. Chah lineage) staffed Theravada monasteries (and 2 bhikkhuni monasteries!). But then again, S. Calif maybe world capital for odd-ball religious sects.

Come to think of it, there is a bhikkuni outpost somewhere out in the wilderness in the south, with a single but s/w respected bhikkuni (who has precepted other bhikkunis through ordination. There's a large thread at SuttaCentral on bhikkuni ordination where this information can be ferreted out).

There are several Zen Centers down there, a couple founded by the renowned Kyozan Joshu Sazaki Roshi.

Thank you so, so much. Just reading the abbess' story nearly brought tears to my eyes as it validated and voiced so much of the frustration and pain I've experienced as a woman practitioner. So happy to see some courageous women carrying on despite obstacles that can at times seem crushing.

I had the pleasure and honor of meeting with her and talking with her and the other nuns from her place when they made a visit to Las Vegas for the Ajahn Brahm program in Las Vegas. A most excellent, wonderful person and bhikkhuni. I highly recommend visiting with her if you get the chance.

You may want to take a look at http://www.buddhanet.info/wbd/province. ... ince_id=26 which lists self-declared Buddhist groups (so some obvious frauds among the legitimate places) there. Then you can ask about specific places.
