Books on Paticca Samuppada (Dependent Co-Arising)

Post by pennilesspaul »

Hi everyone. What books, articles, etc. on paticca samuppada (dependent co-arising or origination) have people here found very useful in not only understanding the concept but also in applying it to their practice? Thank you!

In respect to 'here-&-now' explanations:

1. The Shape of Suffering by Thanissaro Bhikkhu I found the most accurate. Merely reading the introduction (pages 3 to 7) is sufficient. The structure of the explanation of the 12 factors, including their sub-factors, follows the Paticca-Samuppada-Vibhanga Sutta.

2. Practical Dependent Origination by Buddhasada Bhikkhu is long but discusses some historical matters as well as provides some practical explanations (although some of the practical examples can be confusing). The same monk provides a brief explanation in The ABCs of Buddhism .

Mahānidāna Sutta translated by Bhikkhu Bodhi

Back to the Suttanta and ancient Atthakatha, better than modern day's papanca.

Found a very good book on Paticca-samuppada as taught by the Buddha. It is very informative and practical book to discover what Paticca-samuppada really is.
