What are Samprapalapa?

Post by SarathW »

What are Samprapalapa?
What is the reason we engage in Samprapalapa?
Is that the attachment, aversion or ignorance?
For instance, lying is a result of aversion, harsh speech is a result of aversion, backbiting is a result of aversion.

I understand palāpa to mean something like "nonsense" or "pointless, idle talk", but what is the "Sampra" bit?

There is always an official executioner. If you try to take his place, It is like trying to be a master carpenter and cutting wood. If you try to cut wood like a master carpenter, you will only hurt your hand.

He means samphappalāpā, which is the word that means talking nonsense, or unbeneficial speech.

And my guess is that people do it out of a combination of delusion and either greed or hatred.

I Googled and found the following.
Could someone provide the Sutta reference?
It seems Sampappalapa is much worse than lying, harsh speech and backbiting.
===========
By engaging in these 32 types of talks, one will develop greed (lobha), illwill (Dosa), ignorance (Moha) which are hazardous to the eight fold path or Nibbana. There fore one must abstain from these 32 types of talks & engage in 10 types of useful talks Preached in Rathavineeta Sutta in Majjima Nikaya which will be discussed in the next post.

Its difficult when others engage in samphappalāpā by asking questions in foreign languages such as Sinhala & Sanskrit. May you be well. May you be free from suffering. May all beings be free from the suffering of trying to understand lazy questions in foreign languages such as Sinhala & Sanskrit.

he gives talks to the monks on fewness of wants. Contented himself, he gives talks to the monks on contentment. Secluded himself, he gives talks to the monks on seclusion. Unentangled himself, he gives talks to the monks on non-entanglement. Having aroused persistence in himself, he gives talks to the monks on arousing persistence. Consummate in his own virtue, he gives talks to the monks on becoming consummate in virtue. Consummate in his own concentration, he gives talks to the monks on becoming consummate in concentration. Consummate in his own discernment, he gives talks to the monks on becoming consummate in discernment. Consummate in his own release, he gives talks to the monks on becoming consummate in release. Consummate in his own knowledge & vision of release, he gives talks to the monks on becoming consummate in the knowledge & vision of release.[1] He is one who exhorts, informs, instructs, urges, rouses, & encourages his companions in the holy life.'"

In case someone likes to know this is called the tenth Mara.
The way I understand the tenth Mara is a very higher level of mental states if you have surpassed five hindrances.
Otherwise, this is a very lower level of human.
