What's on your Raft ☸🚣? Which sutta passages absolutely critical to core of Buddhism?
http://notesonthedhamma.blogspot.com/20 ... ages.html

Above link includes more than 2 hours worth of pali chanting I recorded for my personal sutta memorization project. I'm curious to hear what sutta passages others on the group have memorized, and especially if I missed anything of vital importance for 'the raft'.

I have spent quite a few days in the last few weeks on my raft here in Wyoming (USA).
The thread title made me think: what are the most critical things on my raft?
Appropriate attention and discernment seem the most critical -- recognizing hazards (the unwholesome) as well as clean lines (the wholesome) that lead to my well-being.
Then comes skill and right effort -- having the knowledge and strength regarding moving the raft to avoid the hazards and run a clean line.
I generally leave the books about rafting at home -- though they have helped in developing the basic skills and some inspiration.
I know this does not directly address your question of specific suttas, so I ask for your indulgence of my self-indulgence -- but thank you for the question that prompted some personal reflection.

There is the case where a monk, a disciple of the noble ones, making it his object to let go, attains concentration, attains singleness of mind. Quite withdrawn from sensuality, withdrawn from unskillful mental qualities, he enters & remains in the first jhana...

And how are the seven factors for awakening developed & pursued so as to bring clear knowing & release to their culmination? There is the case where a monk develops mindfulness as a factor for awakening dependent on seclusion, dependent on dispassion, dependent on cessation, resulting in relinquishment. He develops analysis of qualities as a factor for awakening... persistence as a factor for awakening... rapture as a factor for awakening... serenity as a factor for awakening... concentration [jhana] as a factor for awakening... equanimity as a factor for awakening dependent on seclusion, dependent on dispassion, dependent on cessation, resulting in relinquishment (letting go).

If I were to think & ponder in line with that even for a night... even for a day... even for a day & night, I do not envision any danger that would come from it, except that thinking & pondering a long time would tire the body. When the body is tired, the mind is disturbed; and a disturbed mind is far from concentration.' So I steadied my mind right within, settled, unified, & concentrated it. Why is that? So that my mind would not be disturbed.

Unflagging persistence was aroused in me, and unmuddled mindfulness established. My body was calm & unaroused, my mind concentrated & single. Quite withdrawn from sensuality, withdrawn from unskillful mental qualities, I entered & remained in the first jhana...

There is always an official executioner. If you try to take his place, It is like trying to be a master carpenter and cutting wood. If you try to cut wood like a master carpenter, you will only hurt your hand.

Generally overlooked and critical would be;
In The Middle Sutta https://suttacentral.net/an6.61/en/sujato
Uninstructed Sutta

The above suttas appear to be more philosophical. The 1st i get the impression is often misunderstood but those who emphasize it. The 2nd often used to argue against theories of reincarnation. If Dependent Origination is not understood then how can the 2nd sutta be understood? Probably beginners to Buddhism should first focus on realising the core basics. :shrug:

I memorised "Paticca Samuppada" Pali text. It was a short one so it didn't take much effort.

Next I will try something harder, Abhidhammattha Sangaha Pali.
Hiriottappasampannā,
sukkadhammasamāhitā;
Santo sappurisā loke,
devadhammāti vuccare.
