Question about hell and karma

Post by alexYaYy »

So yesterday I was watching a Thai show and they were visiting one of Thailand's hell parks. Then they arrived at the spiny hell tree and the teacher/ajahn of the show said this punishment is for those who break the third precept (she's not a nun or someone of the sangha just a "psychic" i guess). The host of the show then asked her that he used to cheat on his relationships when he was still a teen and this prompted her to tell him that he will have to climb that same tree in the afterlife before he can reach heaven. So, I just wanted to ask how true does this hold to Buddhism? Is she correct in saying this

Hi Alex Ya

The Pali suttas refer to at least two types of hell:

1. Hell where the wardens of King Yama violently punish evil doers - MN 130

2. Hell where the mind is constantly afflicted by painful disagreeable mental states in the here-&-now - SN 35.135.

For example, about these two types of hell occurring from breaking the 3rd precept, the Dhammapada says:
309. Four misfortunes befall the reckless man who consorts with another's wife: acquisition of demerit, disturbed sleep, ill-repute, and (rebirth in) states of woe.

310. Such a man acquires demerit and an unhappy birth in the future. Brief is the pleasure of the frightened man and woman, and the king imposes heavy punishment. Hence, let no man consort with another's wife.

There is always an official executioner. If you try to take his place, It is like trying to be a master carpenter and cutting wood. If you try to cut wood like a master carpenter, you will only hurt your hand.

Yes, so does it mean that any bad karma we do (which in this case is the host's karma when he was a teen) will be punished in hell and then we will be sent to heaven if we have good karma?

Bad karma performed as a teen before the later practise of good kamma only leads to hell if it ripens due to ignorance about it (MN 136). However, if the bad kamma has been purified with the development of proper hiri (sense of shame), ottappa (fear of repeating the past evil) and right view (that sexual misconduct is wrong & harmful) then it will not lead to hell. The Dhammapada says:
172. He who having been heedless is heedless no more, illuminates this world like the moon freed from clouds.

173. He, who by good deeds covers the evil he has done, illuminates this world like the moon freed from clouds.

The suttas (AN 6.63) say the Noble Eightfold Path ends kamma. If there is the right views found in the Noble Eightfold Path then past bad kamma & its potential hellish results will be purified and be ended. :)
