Need help to keep the 6th precept.

Post by JC938 »

Hi,

I have been trying to keep sila 8 for a few months now. But I have trouble keeping the 6th precept, I did able to keep for sometime but then sometime like today I ate in the evening (night). I want to continue keeping for lifetime but sometime I give up and thought of going back to eating after noon time. I want to get help from someone who is not eating after noon time. How you did it, what you think of when feeling hungry. What benefit does it has so to motivate me to be able to keep.

Thank you.

Uposatha precepts are usually taken only on Uposatha day. Of course, you can take it whenever you like. Sadhu to you. :anjali:

You can take liquid fruit juice without solid fruit pieces in the afternoon. For me, it is helpful.

But I think understanding on Dhamma is important too. Seeing your signature, I can see you still a God believer. Not judging here but I'm sure Buddha did not teach that God can help us to gain Nibbana (Nibbana does not mean immortality either)

Good luck practice.

"Deathlessness" term conveys the correct meaning, I fully agreed with it. But not "immortality".

what is born must die

Nirvana is unborn & everlasting
Yes, I agree with your statement above.
I think there is a subtle difference here between both Deathlessness and immortality.

"Deathlessness" is correct as there will be no future birth and death after Parinibbana.

But "immortality" may carry some misunderstanding in common language usage, like the sense of " immutable soul" or "permanence" might mingle with it.

however they do not embrace self

Ya. The Suttanta translation always say not-self.
To me, the "no-self" translation is a bit off.

To that I disagree. "Soul" fallen into the view of Eternalism, equivalent to "There is a Self". "Soul" is a wrong concept due to our failure to see the arising and ceasing on conditions.

I don't think "There is a Self" and "There is no Self" were the correct English translation. "That is not self" could be better translation.

No…

the point of eternalism is same identity from life to life

whereas soul is not an identity

That I think it is difficult to accept because of the western brought up culture or theology background.

But Buddha was a Vibhajjavadin and gives answer with profound analysing skills without resorting to extremes.

In many Suttas, "There is a Self" theory was clearly rejected by Buddha. "There is no Self" was off due to its misinterpretation to nihilism. So imo, the correct translation term here should be "That is not Self".

Maybe can take a look of this sutta translation:

"Then is there no self?"

A second time, the Blessed One was silent.
