“Self” is an abstract concept to begin with, so you need to define it. In the Buddhist context, “self” refers to something which is not composed of aggregates.
The illusion of a self is an experience that arises from aggregates. But there is nowhere among the aggregates that “self” can be located.
The Buddha certainly didn’t deny that the experience of self doesn’t occur.
