The context in which we should see the ‘Five Points’ is then that of the abhidhamma debates which refine the interpretation of some of the more recondite points of suttanta teaching. We shall see that such a context gives little support to notions which see the ‘Five Points’ as involving some kind of downgrading of the arahat as against a Buddha. This is not the issue. If there is a downgrading, it is rather a devaluing of the arahat who has not developed the abhiññā.
Even during the time of the Buddha people had different ideas about things. For example, Devadatta had different ideas how the Sangha should be run when causing a schism. In the end when things contradict with the suttas factually or morally you have to chose which one to believe, the suttas or later texts.

In the Paravādin Sarvāstivādin Abhidharma system, there is a class of Arhantaḥ ("Arahants") who must use/learn something called the "vajropamasamādhi" to destroy the remainder of their afflictions. Is there any analogue in Theravāda Buddhism to an Arhat who must destroy the remainder of his afflictions despite being an Arhat?

It must be a fake Arahat.
Arahat is "asekhå" (no inner stain).

Do you mean that the term sekha means "residual stain"? I thought it just meant "one in training" - from sikkhati - and that one who was asekha was so by virtue of no longer needing to train.
