Yeah, when I read those accounts today, I see them as no different from the "wanderers of other sects" in the suttas. I imagine a talk from the Buddha would've freed some of them.

I have a novice monk handbook from Pak Au tradition. It has this content that should a monk wants to do yoga, they can do it in the hut but not openly. For me, there is one yoga posture that is necessary for me to attain high concentration. I need this level of concentration to penetrate the dhamma and get insight.
