Post by Alino »

Hello,

I heared that in Visuddhimagga or Abhidhamma the fonction of the brain is just "mucus that flow through the nose when on is ill"...

Can some one give a quot e from Vism or Abhi about the définissons of the brain?

Thank you 🙏

This is what Visuddhimagga stated for brain.
[Brain]
126. This is the lumps of marrow to be found inside the skull. As to colour, it is white, the colour of the flesh of a toadstool; it can also be said that it is the colour of turned milk that has not yet become curd. As to shape, it is the shape of its location. As to direction, it belongs to the upper direction. As to location, it is to be found inside the skull, like four lumps of dough put together to correspond with the [skull’s] four sutured sections. As to delimitation, it is bounded by the skull’s inner surface and by what appertains to brain …

"Those streams which flow throughout the world, Ajita", said the Lord, "Mindfulness serves to curb them in, This I call the restraint of the streams. But wisdom only turns them off."

It is complète description of the brain, or there is further description of It's function?

Can you please tell the chapter where I can find It?

Brain section is only this short. Bhandatacariya Buddhaghosa Thera first described that in the Sutta, there are only 31 parts mentioned by the Buddha. Then he mentioned the brain was an addition, having originally grouped together with 'marrow'.

(Well, I guess today medical science found that there are way more things in the human body than just 31 or 32 parts. Interestingly, things like eye balls, tongue, gum, sexual organs didn't appear in the list...)

It is on the page 253. The section on Samadhi.

Just download a free copy of Visuddhimagga pdf online. I think you can find it online easily.
