Jīvitindriya and Nirodha-Samāpatti

Post by Ceisiwr »

Am I correct in thinking that since mental Jīvitindriya is a cetasika when someone is in Nirodha-Samāpatti they are effectively mentally dead, whilst their body is sustained by the physical Jīvitindriya?

understanding it has the nature of a mirage,
cutting off Māra’s flower-tipped arrows,
one should go beyond the King of Death’s sight.”

Imo in Nirodha-Samāpatti the mental dhammas are suspended by the jhanic factors . The contact for mental are absence for the time beings .

The above is an interesting idea because my impression is sutta may possibly only class jiva as physical. For example:
“Mendicants, there are these three faculties.
“Tīṇimāni, bhikkhave, indriyāni.

What three?
Katamāni tīṇi?

The faculties of femininity, masculinity, and life.
Itthindriyaṁ, purisindriyaṁ, jīvitindriyaṁ—

These are the three faculties.”
imāni kho, bhikkhave, tīṇi indriyānī”ti

They understand: ‘This field of perception is empty of the perception of the defilements of sensuality, desire to be reborn [becoming] and ignorance.

So ‘suññamidaṁ saññāgataṁ kāmāsavenā’ti pajānāti, ‘suññamidaṁ saññāgataṁ bhavāsavenā’ti pajānāti, ‘suññamidaṁ saññāgataṁ avijjāsavenā’ti pajānāti, ‘atthi cevidaṁ asuññataṁ yadidaṁ—

There is only this that is not emptiness, namely that associated with the six sense fields dependent on this body and conditioned by life.’

imameva kāyaṁ paṭicca saḷāyatanikaṁ jīvitapaccayā’ti.

Why don’t I forcefully suppress this illness, stabilize the life force, and live on?”
Yannūnāhaṁ imaṁ ābādhaṁ vīriyena paṭipaṇāmetvā jīvitasaṅkhāraṁ adhiṭṭhāya vihareyyan”ti.

So that is what he did.
Atha kho bhagavā taṁ ābādhaṁ vīriyena paṭipaṇāmetvā jīvitasaṅkhāraṁ adhiṭṭhāya vihāsi.

Then the Buddha’s illness died down.
Atha kho bhagavato so ābādho paṭippassambhi.

“I’ve reached a ripe old age,
“Paripakko vayo mayhaṁ,

and little of my life is left.
parittaṁ mama jīvitaṁ;

However, jiva is used to mean "the soul" however this appears to not be a Buddha teaching:
If you have the view that the soul and the body are the same thing, there is no living of the spiritual life.
‘Taṁ jīvaṁ taṁ sarīraṁ’ iti vā, bhikkhave, diṭṭhiyā sati brahmacariyavāso na hoti.

If you have the view that the soul and the body are different things, there is no living of the spiritual life.
‘Aññaṁ jīvaṁ aññaṁ sarīraṁ’ iti vā, bhikkhave, diṭṭhiyā sati brahmacariyavāso na hoti.

To help us understand Abhidhamma, are there any Suttas that explcitly unambiguously refer to mental jīvitindriya?
There is always an official executioner. If you try to take his place, It is like trying to be a master carpenter and cutting wood. If you try to cut wood like a master carpenter, you will only hurt your hand.

What I understand is that the consciousness is suspended as if a stone will be suspended in the air when you threw it away.
