searching Sutta on criticism / Right Speech

Post by mirco »

Dhamma Greetings Everyone,

I vaguely remember the content of a Sutta, but can't remember where to find it.

It's about criticism/feedback/RightSpeech.

The Buddha (or a main disciple) taught, that only positive feedback has to be given, even if a person asks for criticism or feedback on personal shortcomings. Only if a good friend really kind of begs for that, one should mention it, but in a very light and modest way.

Anyone remember that Sutta?

Regards,

Hello micro,

There may be something here:

Right Speech from his own lips

With metta,
Chris

Dear Chris,

it seems, as if [B. Speech of a Sappurisa (Noble Person)] comes close to what I can remember.
I think, this is it and I only have a bad memory.

Although I still can't find the Sutta in the pali-canon. The source sais A.ii.77, but I can't find that.
Or I don't know how to look it up. The only thing I found by interpreting A. ii. 77 is this.

Thank you so far!

Kind Regards,
Mirco

He who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that. His reasons may be good, and no one may have been able to refute them.
But if he is equally unable to refute the reasons on the opposite side, if he does not so much as know what they are, he has no ground for preferring either opinion …
...
He must be able to hear them from persons who actually believe them … he must know them in their most plausible and persuasive form.
