I think this topic is not of value due to lots of ambiguity in it.
First, we have no idea to define the exact moment of 'death', thus 'immediacy' is a moot.

2nd, dreams, deep sleep, absorption, astral travel, do we qualify those as intermediate states.
Once we start to disengaging with the body, we get into one of those states.

Overall, it is a question putting in a simple term - do we ever have a state completely disconnected with a material body.

There is a definite proof provided by Arahant Sariputta Thera in Sampasadaniya Sutta.
...he knows the unbroken stream of consciousness as established in this world and established in the next.
It is unbroken, one consciousness rising and ceasing after another, as what was taught in Abhidhamma. There isn't a resting period between consciousnesses. There is no confirmation for "Antarabhava" in Sutta Pitaka.
Hiriottappasampannā,
sukkadhammasamāhitā;
Santo sappurisā loke,
devadhammāti vuccare.
