All the Theravada suttas free online and offline

Post by thebuddhaswords »

We’re pleased to announce that another way to imbibe the teachings of the Buddha is now available both online and for free download and use on all major platforms. It uses web technology to present the Buddha’s teachings in a format that enables easy access and portability between devices from smart phones to PCs and Macs.

It differs from Sutta Central by limiting the scope to the best available, copyright free, translations of Theravada teachings with English translations only. As such, the entire site occupies around 130Mb. Bhante Sujato’s translations of the Nikayas are the backbone of the site. Thanks Bhante!

The live version can be found at: https://thebuddhaswords.net where you will find download and installation instructions if you’d like it on your device. The image below shows it installed on a PC.

Features:
  • Translations are free of onerous copyright restrictions
Doesn’t need an internet connection if installed on your device.
Can search in either English or Pali offline
The whole site is free to copy, edit and share if the copyright wishes of the various translators are met
Mobile friendly - works well on all but the smallest screen sizes.
Can display English and Pali side by side with the click of a button
    Shows variant readings
Includes a Pali lookup when hovering over a Pali word
Includes a study guide (In the Buddha’s Words with Bhikkhu Bodhi’s notes and links and Open Source translations)
Includes a cross reference table for finding PTS style references
Includes the four major Nikayas as well as the Minor (Khuddaka) Nikaya
Includes the Vinaya and Thanissaro Bhikkhu's Buddhist Monastic Code
    Lots more
Thanks mainly to Venerable Upatissa. If it wasn’t for him, his energy, his coding skill and his presence, the work of aligning the English and Pali on each of Bhante Sujato’s 3,700+ pages of translations would have been waaay too daunting. :anjali:

We hope that this is a benefit to you as you walk the Noble Eightfold Path.

Please report any errors and make suggestions via the email address on the Contact Page of the site. Thanks!

No Abhidhamma Pitaka?

Classical Theravada upholds Pali Tipitaka (Vinaya Pitaka, Suttanta Pitaka, and Abhidhamma Pitaka).

It will be nice if we have a new set of translation for Abhidhamma Pitaka, instead of the old PTS version.

You can learn fluent Pali and do that one for us.

Is there a free abhidhamma available already? Or only copyrighted ones?

Yes, there is a set of translation (PTS version) for it available for free download online (abhidhamma.com), but are copyrighted and cannot be modified.

I think the translation can be better as it used many Sanskrit terms instead of Pali (especially the first book Dhammasangani). Just my opinion though.

Sutta Central has English translations of the Abhidhamma Pitaka (and other languages and schools) at https://suttacentral.net/pitaka/abhidhamma

You're very welcome. It started off as a study tool for myself with Bhikkhu Bodhi's translations and went from there. Too good not to share!

I tried to focus on what the Buddha taught directly so excluded the Abhidhammma, Jatakas, Visuddhimagga, Vimuttimagga etc.

I hope you find it useful and use the Contact page to let us know of problems and to offer suggestions.

I'd rather read ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi's translations. Are you planning to include these some day?

So difficult! Abhidharma isn't easy!
What is the Uncreated?
Sublime & free, what is that obscured Eternity?

Since you make that claim, you might as well discard Suttanta such as Saccavibhanga Suttanta, Maratajjaniya Suttanta, Rathavinita Suttanta, Sammaditthi Suttanta, Anangana Suttanta, Mahavedalla Suttanta, Culavedalla Suttanta, Maha Kaccana Bhaddekaratta Suttanta, and many more. All of these Suttas weren't spoken by Lord Buddha too.
"Suppose there was a man needing a water-snake, seeking a water-snake, wandering in search of a water-snake. He would see a large water-snake and grasp it by the coils or by the tail. The water-snake, turning around, would bite him on the hand, on the arm, or on one of his limbs, and from that cause he would suffer death or death-like suffering. Why is that? Because of the wrong-graspedness of the water-snake. In the same way, there is the case where some worthless men study the Dhamma... Having studied the Dhamma, they don't ascertain the meaning of those Dhammas with their discernment. Not having ascertained the meaning of those Dhammas with their discernment, they don't come to an agreement through pondering. They study the Dhamma both for attacking others and for defending themselves in debate. They don't reach the goal for which [people] study the Dhamma. Their wrong grasp of those Dhammas will lead to their long-term harm & suffering. Why is that? Because of the wrong-graspedness of the Dhammas.

Wise person.

Remember the teaching is only relate to 4NT / DO. Any Buddha devotee (arahant, non returner, once returner and stream enterer) will only talk the same way due to straight view.

Also remember,
Svakkahto bhagavato dhammo.
Sanditthiko akaliko ehipassiko Opanayiko
paccattam veditabbo vinnuhiti
The teaching of Buddha is clear and concise (no need commentaries),
Can be experienced through Senses, independent of time, come and verify through practice, bring the mind inwardly
Can be realized through practice by the wise person.
May you gain unshakable confidence in triple gems through your own insight/experiences.
:candle:
May you be relax, happy, comfortable and free of dukkhas from hearing true dhamma.
May you gain unshakable confidence in Buddha, Dhamma and (Ariya) Sangha.

Unfortunately only a few of Bhikkhu Bodhi's translations are freely available. The ebook versions from Wisdom can be relatively inexpensive when they have sales, and give easy access to the footnotes and front matter.

Hello all .. The Buddha's Words website is now available as a Progressive Web App (PWA) which makes installation easy across a range of operating systems. The only requirement is a PWA compatible browser such as recent versions of Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Safari. Once it's installed it behaves like an app with full functionality offline and is automatically updated whenever there are changes (and an internet connection is available).

Instructions for installation are on the www.thebuddhaswords.net website.

I hope it is useful to you as you progress along the Noble Eightfold Path. :anjali:
