I found nothing relevant in the Visuddhimagga, which often refers to such stories.
The simile of having patience like an elephant enduring arrows in battle is found in the Nāga Vagga of the Dhammapada.

Do you mean "An Elephant Longs for the Forest"? I think it doesn't have a direct connection with this story, but it's still close to it.
