Bhante Vimalaramsi: the wisest monk of our time

Post by rhinoceroshorn »

I just wanted to share his teachings for who don't know him yet.
We are very lucky to be alive in the same time as him.

Eyes downcast, not footloose,
senses guarded, with protected mind,
not oozing — not burning — with lust,
wander alone
like a rhinoceros.
Sutta Nipāta 1.3 - Khaggavisana Sutta

See, Ānanda! All those conditioned phenomena have passed, ceased, and perished. So impermanent are conditions, so unstable are conditions, so unreliable are conditions. This is quite enough for you to become disillusioned, dispassionate, and freed regarding all conditions.

I’ve enjoyed some of this Dhamma talks but I don’t agree with his views on Jhana, nor the misinformation he spreads about Ven. Buddhaghosa and the Visuddhimagga.
“Knowing that this body is just like foam,
understanding it has the nature of a mirage,
cutting off Māra’s flower-tipped arrows,
one should go beyond the King of Death’s sight.”

Hello my friend.
Thanks for this post, I am going to investigate it. :reading:
We have a long Jhana debate thread here: https://www.dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=4597

Regarding his claims about Ven. Buddhaghosa and the Visu. this was addressed here some time ago by Tiltbillings: https://dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?t=7375&start=40

I don't find any helpful reading about Jhānas. After some pondering I decided not to read about it anymore, at least from forums in general. There is much discrepancy in experiences and also much misinformation, so it's better not to get infected by others. But thanks for sharing.
I am investigating about the Visuddhimagga. :reading:

This was one of the best dhammatalks I have ever heard.

I found Bhante Vimalaramsi's teachings to be strange, so I typed in youtube: Bhante Vimalaramsi fake monk, and this came up:

I'm not saying I agree with that person.

I listened to a lot of his talks about 13 years ago when I was studying the Majjhima Nikaya, along with talks by Bhikkhu Bodhi, Ajahn Brahm, and others, and it was interesting to have these different perspectives.

However, like Ceisiwr, I don't find his discussion of the Visuddhimagga particularly interesting. It's not about having different views, it's that his statements are full of misinformation. See this discussion from many years ago by Tiltbillings: viewtopic.php?p=117374#p117374
