Can you count in Pali?

Post by SarathW »

Can you count in Pali?
I am reading a Sinhalese book and the author uses Pali numerals and I have trouble reading it.
Can you find a YouTube video or recording for counting in Pali?

Just 1 to 10 for me. Those are easy because there are several Pali terms that start with them; pañca-sila, etc.

I started a Pali course several years ago, but didn't stick with it, so forgot most of it. Languages need lots of practice and repetition. The best way to learn is to live in a country that speaks that language, which there is none for Pali.

Voted no, because I can't. But then again, I can understand 1 through 10, with exceptions, when I see them in text.

I voted "up to 10".
I can count up to eleven, in ordinal numbers. Not much familiar with exact usage of pali cardinal numbers. Pali ordinal numbers up to 10 are commonly found in everyday writings in Burmese.

From wikipedia page of Burmese numerals:
  • Ordinal numbers
Ordinal numbers, from first to tenth, are Burmese pronunciations of their Pali equivalents.[1]

Can you provide some common Pali words with English meanings so we can remember the counting?

Yeah, memorize Cariyāpiṭakapāḷi or Jākatå, etc.

Cariyāpiṭakapāḷi
Each section will find the number one, two
... ten, and so on.

Akitticariyaṃ paṭhamaṃ,
Saṅkhacariyaṃ dutiyaṃ,
... Sasapaṇḍitacariyaṃ dasamaṃ.
:anjali:

I memorizing Cariyāpiṭakapāḷi,
Now is Cūḷabodhicariyā.
And Majjhima Nikāyå (1 page per day)
And Dhammapadå (1 verse per 3 days)

I have to memorizing Khuddakapāṭhapāḷi
In Vesākha Pūjā this year.

Knowing Bengali , yes I can, because they are quite similar. Personally, I feel Pali has influence on several languages like Bengali,Bhojpuri,Oriya, etc.

1 paṭhama (প্রথম)
2 dutiya (দ্বিতীয়)
3 tatiya( তৃতীয়)
4 catuttha (চতুর্থ)
5 pañca (পাঁচ )
6 cha (ছয়)
7 satta (সাত)
8 aṭṭha (আট )
9 nava (নয় or নব)
10: dasa (দশ)
