Dictionary of Pali Idioms

Post by syhmetta »

Hello. I am a Pali student looking for this book titled Dictionary of Pali Idioms: An Aid to the Student of Pali. The author is Anuruddha, K., Thera. Is there an online PDF version that I can download? Thank you so much for your help. Metta. _/\_

Dear Syhmetta:

I do have a PDF of this book, if you send me your email I can send it to you via wetransfers, please let me know. Venerable Anuruddha was my teacher in Hong Kong, the book is very hard to get!

Dear Friends:

Sure, happy to help. Here is the link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/z08j52l6lwpub ... s.pdf?dl=0

I am sometimes not really sure I fully understand how to use it to its full potential, like how to look things up efficiently etc., so please let me know if anyone finds it helpful for specific purposes.

Sincerely

I have added an invisible text layer, so now you can search for any word in the dictionary:

To download it, click "..." (More) on the right.

it says it won't download because that pdf file is more than 500MB.

How in the world can a text dictionary be that big?
The entire PED in html text source is only a few megabytes.

Frank, the size is so big, probable, because it is not text but images. Usually, in these type of scanned documents, each page is stored as a separate image inside the pdf. The 500 MB limit and the warning is only for the preview function.
Just click on the "download" button -> "Direct download" and you will be fine. Just ignore the warning about the size.

Thanks. What's on the invisible text layer? If it was able to OCR a decent version of the image files with searchable text, can we have a version of just the text conversion, without images?

Thanks! how well does searching really work with that pdf? Very few diacritical symbols seem to get recognized by the OCR.

You are welcome.

The primary idea is to make the text searchable by English words. I guess most Pali words can also be found.
