Meditate on rejoicing.
Muditaṁ, rāhula, bhāvanaṁ bhāvehi.
For when you meditate on rejoicing any negativity will be given up.

"Negativity" is a psychobabble term for discontent.

What is the root term here, please? I've been puzzled by this one before. Is it merely the negative of rati (liking, love, attachment)? And is there a connection to ārati (leaving off, abstention)? The online dictionary on SC only gives the proper name - one of Mara's daughters, and it doesn't feature in Warder.Dhammanando wrote: ↑Sat Mar 20, 2021 12:27 pm "Negativity" is a psychobabble term for discontent.

Re: Which pali word is negativity ?
It's worth noting that there are quite a number of words beginning with the negative prefix a- for which the PED gives no separate entry but simply defines them in the entry for the unnegated form. Arati, however, isn't one of these - it does get its own entry:Sam Vara wrote: ↑Sat Mar 20, 2021 12:57 pm What is the root term here, please? I've been puzzled by this one before. As for ārati, it's derived from the same root as rati and arati (i.e. ram) but with a different prefix.Arati (f.) [a + rati] dislike, discontent, aversion Sn 270, 436, 642, 938; Dh 418 (= ukkaṇṭhitattaŋ DhA iv.225); Th 2, 339 (= ukkaṇṭhi ThA 239); Sdhp 476.
As for arati's meaning, though in some places its a- prefix is merely privative (i.e. mere absence of rati) this isn't common. Meanings like discontent, boredom, resentment and, in later texts, envy are more usual.Ārati (f.) [Sk. ārati, ā + ram] leaving off, abstinence Vv 639 (= paṭivirati VvA 263); in exegetical style occurring in typ. combn. with virati paṭivirati veramaṇī, e. g. at Nd2 462; Dhs 299.

In whatever way they conceive it,
It turns out otherwise.

Many thanks, Bhante, that's very helpful.

Since we're dealing with one monk giving advice to another might it be something akin to acedia, i.e. spiritual apathy or boredom?
