maññeyya

Post by asahi »

To Pali teachers ,

What would be the precise meaning of maññeyya ?
Some translated as conceiving , others as identifying .

This appears to be the optative of maññati, which means "imagines, is of the opinion, deems". So it would mean something like "would/could/may imagine, etc..."

So let them not identify with the eye, let them not identify regarding the eye, let them not identify as the eye, let them not identify ‘the eye is mine.’
cakkhuṁ na maññeyya, cakkhusmiṁ na maññeyya, cakkhuto na maññeyya, cakkhu meti na maññeyya

he should not conceive the eye, should not conceive in the eye, should not conceive from the eye, should not conceive, ‘The eye is mine.’

BB's version seems to be clearer and make more sense, which is often the case.

I suppose it is lucky that those not pali literate can compare two version of translation or even better more than that and also can read in other languages .
