bhavissāmī

Post by Ceisiwr »

I'm confused by this word. Bhavi is became or existed, but how to read it with sāmī?
“Knowing that this body is just like foam,
understanding it has the nature of a mirage,
cutting off Māra’s flower-tipped arrows,
one should go beyond the King of Death’s sight.”

It's a verb, first person singular future tense from "bhavati": "I will be". The "i" at the end should be short, the lengthening must be because of iti.
How good and wonderful are your days,
How true are your ways?

Can it ever be read as “I won’t be”?

Not as it stands. Can you give the context?

Sure:
“Sir, might you be a god?”
“Devo no bhavaṁ bhavissatī”ti?

“I will not be a god, brahmin.”
“Na kho ahaṁ, brāhmaṇa, devo bhavissāmī”ti.

“Might you be a fairy?”
“Gandhabbo no bhavaṁ bhavissatī”ti?

“I will not be a fairy.”
“Na kho ahaṁ, brāhmaṇa, gandhabbo bhavissāmī”ti.

“Might you be a native spirit?”
“Yakkho no bhavaṁ bhavissatī”ti?

“I will not be a native spirit.”
“Na kho ahaṁ, brāhmaṇa, yakkho bhavissāmī”ti.

“Might you be a human?”
“Manusso no bhavaṁ bhavissatī”ti?

“I will not be a human.”
“Na kho ahaṁ, brāhmaṇa, manusso bhavissāmī”ti.
