āloko

Post by asahi »

Hi forum ,

What does "light" (āloko) meant here ?
Does āloko synonym with dhammesu cakkhuṁ , paññā , ñāṇaṁ , vijjā ?
What does Vision , knowledge , wisdom and higher knowledge meant ?
This noble truth of the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering has been developed.’ Such was the vision, knowledge, wisdom, realization, and light that arose in me regarding teachings not learned before from another.
‘Taṁ kho panidaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā ariyasaccaṁ bhāvitan’ti me, bhikkhave, pubbe ananussutesu dhammesu cakkhuṁ udapādi, ñāṇaṁ udapādi, paññā udapādi, vijjā udapādi, āloko udapādi.

"Āloko" here likely means "clarity". All of those words are synonyms -- they all mean "final understanding". You can look up the translation of the commentary or I can translate it at some later point.

Just cakkhuṁ.

Dhammesu is rendered "regarding teachings" in the translation you posted.

In whatever way they conceive it,
It turns out otherwise.

Bhante ,

ālokasaññaṁ here refers to meditation of (day or sun) lights ?
But what if that doesn’t work? Then focus on the perception of light, concentrating on the perception of day,

No ce te evaṁ viharato taṁ middhaṁ pahīyetha, tato tvaṁ, moggallāna, ālokasaññaṁ manasi kareyyāsi, divāsaññaṁ adhiṭṭhaheyyāsi—

regardless of whether it’s night or day.

yathā divā tathā rattiṁ yathā rattiṁ tathā divā.

And so, with an open and unenveloped heart, develop a mind that’s full of radiance.

Iti vivaṭena cetasā apariyonaddhena sappabhāsaṁ cittaṁ bhāveyyāsi.

Yes.
Well, to be absolutely precise -- although it "refers" to the "meditation of lights", ālokasaññā itself means "cognition of the light", "perception of the light".

aloko udapadi means visible light arose, literally.
It's not talking about 'enlightened' in a metaphorical sense.
In a decent third jhana, a meditator usually can see some light with their eyes closed in meditation.
In fourth jhana, the light becomes brighter and more abundant.
the stronger the light, the more accurate and perceptive one becomes.

In unusually strong cases, even ordinary people using their flesh eyes can see light being emitted from powerful meditators.

Look at the difference between a baby, teenager, and an old man. You can see the difference in light, and the (potential) strength of their mental faculties is proportional to that. Look at some old powerful meditators, their skin may be wrinkled, but they have a glow, and their eyes have an eeries shine. This can be seen with ordinary eyes.
