Metre in SN 1.2

Post by waryoffolly »

I'm taking a first look at Ven Anandajoti's book on metre in verse (https://www.ancient-buddhist-texts.net/ ... Metres.pdf).

I was trying to analyze verses in the sagathavagga, but I got stuck pretty quickly!
Nan dī bha va pa rik kha yā
sC lO sO sO sO sC sO lO EOL
-- -- ( ( ( -- ( --

Sañ ñā viñ ñā ṇa saṅ kha yā
sC lO sC lO sO sC sO lO EOL
-- -- -- -- ( -- ( --

Ve da nā naṁ ni ro dhā u pa sa mā
sO sO lO sC sO sO lO s0 sO sO lO EOL
( ( -- -- ( ( -- ( ( ( --

E vaṁ khvā haṁ ā vu so jā nā mi
vO sC lO sC lO sO sO lO lO sO EOL
-- -- -- -- -- ( ( -- -- --

Sat tā naṁ ni mok khaṁ pa mok khaṁ vi ve kan”(ti)
sC lO sC sO (s/v)C sC sO sC sC sO sO sC EOL
-- -- -- ( -- -- ( -- -- ( ( --

-- = Heavy
( = light
So I have no clue what type of metre this is overall. First, it's five lines, which is unusual. It's also got 8 lines for the first two, which makes it look like siloka, as well as the correct cadence in the even line, but the last three lines are really odd. Maybe there's some weird resolution is going on? Although for the last two lines I don't see any way to make this fit into siloka. Third line could potentially have multiple resolutions with a ravipula variation, although it seems stretched.

Anyone wanna help me out? (https://suttacentral.net/sn1.2/en/sujat ... ript=latin)
