What is Buddhism: clear explanation

Post by kalyana.mitta »

Hello all. I came across a video by a monk which clearly explains what Buddhism is and I think it would be really helpful for anyone that is new to Buddhism and wants to get an overview. :D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VA4Aa6qz6S4
"Whatever treasure in this world or in other any worlds, whatever precious jewel there is in the heavens, none is equal to the Buddha. In the Buddha is this precious jewel. By there truth, may there be wellbeing."

.

There's also "An Outline of Buddhism" from Wat Pah Nanachat which is worth reading by newcomers:

Buddhism is NOT a religion. It is the WAY OF LIFE that has brought peace of mind, happiness & harmony to millions of people in its long history of more than 2,500 years.

It is suitable for anyone who wishes to live his/her life peacefully for the benefit of others as it teaches one to have a realistic view of both life & the world.

It all began with Schools of Buddhism which share the same basic teachings of the Buddha but their intepretations of the ideas & practices are not quite the same.

2 great traditions of Buddhism are Theravada & Mahayana.

Theravada focuses on attaining Arahatship while Mahayana focuses on attaining Bodhisattvahood.

Be it Buddha, Mother Mary, Jesus Christ or Allah, we refer to the one same God whose text & bodily form have been spread to the world with similar context in the published Bible, Koran, etc. It all teaches people to DO GOOD & forbid the harming of another being.

Sounds like a religion to me.

Just because many people say that they believe that religion is bad doesn't mean the word should be avoided.

“Sabbapāpassa akaraṇaṃ,

kusalassa upasampadā;

Sacitta pariyo dapanaṃ,

etaṃ buddhāna sāsanaṃ“

(Dhammapada verse 183)

This Dhammapada explains Buddhism best.
