“The ancient commentary thereof
was sang By the First council,
Mahakassapa Their leader, and later again by seers,
Mahinda bought it to the peerless isle, Ceylon”
..........
What if a beginner gets used to Fill in the blanks of this kind of verses?"—the commentary, I say, upon this Scripture
was at the first Council rehearsed
by five hundred holy elders
and in later times rehearsed again and yet again."

If someone ask you how to get started in Buddhism. I would suggest you to tell them to start keeping sila.
I wrote a post here - viewtopic.php?t=42824
Sila makes you virtuous, a good human being and god and devas helps those who have sila. If you have alot of knowledge but no sila, you will still suffer and have wrong views, what is knowledge anyway, knowledge tells us what is right and wrong, so basically sila IS knowledge, it tells us killing is wrong etc..
Start with sila and everything will be ok.
Good luck.

I advice beginner to start with keeping precepts., sila 8 if you want to practice meditation easier.
You can read about the teachings from accesstoinsight. You can also learn from various bhikkus, luang por cha is an arahant I believe so I also listen to his teachings.

Re: What do you give to a beginner online?
or if you want to progress in dhamma, then sila 8 and start meditating, do anapanasati. there is no point to know much but don't practice, you just need to know 4 noble truth, noble 8 fold path, triple gem, keeping sila 8 and practicing anapanasati, and read some suttas to know some more but not neccessary, If you can, you just go and stay in a monastery with teacher, you won't get lost like how I have been.
good luck.

Ask them what the want. Honestly if any of my friends ask, well I ask them what do you want to know?
And that usually helps narrow down the material.
There is a lot of material out there brother, your gonna need their help to figure that out.
