Digha Nikaya Commentaries

Post by shuka »

I want to read commentaries written on the Digha Nikaya Suttas.
This Sumaṅgalavilāsinī online is in Pali. Where can I read an English translation of it? Are there other commentaries on the Digha Nikaya?

Hi shuka,

I don't think there is a translation of the whole commentary. The Pali is three volumes here:
http://www.palitext.com/palitext/ptext.htm#dnc
Sumaṅgalavilāsinī,
3 volumes:
Vol. I (1929, 2nd edn. 1968) ed. T.W.Rhys Davids and J.E. Carpenter; 2019
Vol. II (1931, 2nd edn. 1970),
Vol. III (1932, 2nd edn. 1971) ed. W.Stede
Set ISBN 250 1 £88.00 « Add to Basket »
Vol. I ISBN 174 2 £40.00 « Add to Basket »
Vol. II ISBN 175 0 £29.30 « Add to Basket »
Vol. III ISBN 176 9 £29.30 « Add to Basket »
Commentary on the Dīgha-nikāya by Buddhaghosa. (5th century C.E.)
There are small extracts in various translations, such as Maurice Walshe's Wisdom Publications translation.
There are some translations (mostly published by BPS) of the commentary for single suttas such as DN1 and DN15.
See this post: viewtopic.php?p=457600#p457600
unfortunately, some of the links there are only to translations of the suttas, not commentaries, so you may have to search around to find the commentaries themselves.

Bhikkhu Bodhi's
The All-Embracing Net of Views (The Brahmajala Sutta and its Commentaries) is an excellent translation of the first sutta of the Digha Nikaya.

Translations of the commentaries to four of the DN Suttas are available at archive.org.

The four are the Brahmajāla, Sāmaññaphala, Mahānidāna and Sampasādanīya Suttas.
