Cherry Blossom: a lesson on Anicca

Post by rhinoceroshorn »

Hello dear Dhamma friends,

There is a cherry blossom tree (sakura) in front of the house where I'm currently living in and it's blooming. It's only once a year and it lasts for only a short time, but it is worth waiting. The flower is not just beautiful, but carries the remainder of the transience of life which always refreshes me.
"Mono-no aware: the ephemeral nature of beauty – the quietly elated, bittersweet feeling of having been witness to the dazzling circus of life – knowing that none of it can last. It’s basically about being both saddened and appreciative of transience – and also about the relationship between life and death. In Japan, there are four very distinct seasons, and you really become aware of life and mortality and transience. You become aware of how significant those moments are.”

Here are some pictures I took. Hope you like them:

Eyes downcast, not footloose,
senses guarded, with protected mind,
not oozing — not burning — with lust,
wander alone
like a rhinoceros.

See, Ānanda! All those conditioned phenomena have passed, ceased, and perished. So impermanent are conditions, so unstable are conditions, so unreliable are conditions. This is quite enough for you to become disillusioned, dispassionate, and freed regarding all conditions.

I took some pictures with a Daruma Doll I have here.

Yes, this thread is too much Mahayana.

Yes, it is very beautiful.
I was in Japan about two years back to see Cherry Blossoms.
By the way, you have to see Aniica in external (eg: Cherry Blossoms) and internal (impermanence of the eye)
What Buddha taught was the impermanence (Anicca) of the six senses.
