Chris Macie (cjmacie) passed away a few years back

Post by samseva »

I had a few interesting discussions with Chris, especially regarding meditation (he was lucky enough to study meditation at Shaila Catherine's center, as well as Sayādaw U Sīlānanda's center). Also enjoyed his posts. He stopped posting some years ago and I was hoping he would pop back up here on DhammaWheel or SuttaCentral. I occasionally thought of him, fearing he likely passed away. I searched his full name this week and it turns out this was the case.

Thought it was best to mention it here, for anyway who knew/interacted with him. From a friend of his, about his passing away:
After a short two month affliction with congestive heart failure, Chris Macie passed away around 3 PM Pacific Time on June 25 [2019] in a recovery nursing home near San Jose. I don't know how many of you knew Chris, he was active on DhO from around 2011 through 2014 or so, but then left to hang out in Sutta Central and other sites with a more scholarly direction. Chris was an accomplished jhana practitioner, and well read in the Suttas and classical meditation literature. He would often come on DhO and argue or discuss something from the Sutta perspective, favoring the approach of the Forest Monk tradition when it came to meditation practice. For retreat practice, he went to the Tathagatha Meditation Center in San Jose. Chris and I were Dharma buddies from Insight Meditation South Bay. He was also an acupunturist, an expert in Chinese herbs, an early particpant in the pre-commercial Internet (he was a member of the Well), an accomplished organist, and a good friend.

I wondered what had become of him. A learned and civilising influence.

I'm sorry to hear that. I always very much enjoyed his postings.

Liberation is the inevitable fruit of the path and is bound to blossom forth when there is steady and persistent practice. The only requirements for reaching the final goal are two: to start and to continue. If these requirements are met there is no doubt the goal will be attained. This is the Dhamma, the undeviating law.

I don’t think I ever interacted with him, but I’ve read some of his posts here and elsewhere. Seemed like a nice guy. Sad to hear.

understanding it has the nature of a mirage,
cutting off Māra’s flower-tipped arrows,
one should go beyond the King of Death’s sight.”

And what is right speech? Abstaining from lying, from divisive speech, from abusive speech, & from idle chatter: This is called right speech.

I remember reading that he also practiced tai chi. I have always felt that he is very knowledgeable. Encountering him is rare.
And the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus, saying: "Behold now, bhikkhus, I exhort you: All compounded things are subject to vanish. Strive with earnestness!"

This was the last word of the Tathagata.
