Compare The Chamberlains sutta SN 55.6 & SA 860

Post by starter »

SN 55.6 https://suttacentral.net/sn55.6/en/sujato:

"... A noble disciple who has four things is a stream-enterer, not liable to be reborn in the underworld, bound for awakening. What four?

It’s when a noble disciple has experiential confidence in the Buddha … the teaching … the Saṅgha … They live at home rid of the stain of stinginess, freely generous, open-handed, loving to let go, committed to charity, loving to give and to share. ..."

SA 860:

SA 860 only mentioned the lay disciple's generosity and the Buddha's affirmation of it; it
did not mention the four factors of the stream entry, esp. generosity as the last factor -- which is different from the majority of the suttas that list accomplished sila as the factor, not generosity.

About the four factors and generosity (daana) in connection with the main teachings of stream entry in SA and SN versions, you may read pp. 228-235 (particularly pp. 232-234) in (10) Stream-entry in Fundamental Teachings of Early Buddhism by Choong Mun-keat.

could it be that they are compatible
that is to say, if you accomplish generosity you accomplish sila, or if you accomplish sila you accomplish generosity
I host a sutta discussion via Zoom Sundays at 11AM Chicago time — message me if you are interested

I think the texts of the Samyutta/Samyukta collection do not say so.

According the mentioned book's section (10) Stream-entry, the Buddha in the sutras teaches all together “six qualities” (as merits, virtues, intrinsic worth):

- The basic four qualities (i.e. the three faiths, Buddha-Dhamma-Saṅgha, and ‘morality’ sīla)

- Deva-paths to the heavens (emphasising ‘non-malice’ abyāpajjha in connection with the basic four qualities), and

- ‘Charitable giving’ dāna
