Is "asura" a state of deprivation ???

Post by DooDoot »

Dear forum

ATI's The Thirty-one Planes of Existence says the asura realm is a state of deprivation, for which the cause of rebirth there is explained in MN 41. However, i could not find any reference to 'asura' in MN 41.

Is the "asura" realm a state of deprivation according to the Pali suttas ???

Thank you :)
There is always an official executioner. If you try to take his place, It is like trying to be a master carpenter and cutting wood. If you try to cut wood like a master carpenter, you will only hurt your hand.

Iti 93:
Being unaware of these three fires, this generation delights in personal existence.

Unfree from the bonds of Māra, they swell the ranks of hell, existence in the animal realm, asura-demons and the sphere of ghosts.

There is a section where people of good conduct wish to be reborn in various “good” spheres.

There is no section where people of bad conduct wish to be reborn in various “awful” spheres. If there was, then someone of bad conduct might wish to be born among the asuras.

Interestingly enough, “the gods of Yama” is one of those “good” spheres. Another question might be “why would one of good conduct want to be born among the gods of the god of Hell?” 🧐

It appears to be a different yama.

1. yāma gods

2. yama king of death

Certainly, the “macron” makes a huge difference. However, I did notice in the Yāma link the following definition:
(usually pl. Yāmā devā) one who belongs to Yama or the ruler of the Underworld; a subject of Yama the realm of Yama
Concerning the distortion of the Asura plane from MN 41 - I would still recommend that no mention of people conducting themselves badly make certain wishes for lower rebirths. Just my 2 €
