Sutta reference From Bhante S.Sobhana's blog

Post by bhante dhamma »

Greetings dear Dhammacaris,
Regarding this ...
"The Buddha advised the young brahman Māgha on how to make a successful alms offering, he told him while offering to still his mind in every respect (sabbattha ca vippasādehi cittaṃ) and added that the act of offering (yañño) should be the basis (ārammaṇaṃ) through which one abandons defilements.." Via this site https://pts.dhamma-dana.de/ couldn't find the given reference
Sn. 508-514

That site gave the ambattha sutta D3? for this
".. associate the two terms, for instance saying that the Buddha taught Dhamma when he knew his listener’s mind was free from the hindrances and stilled (vinīvaraṇacittaṃ … pasannacittaṃ, D.1.110)..." Any ideas
Ven @Dhammanando ... aham kataññu hoti

And when the Buddha knew that Pokkharasāti’s mind was ready, pliable, rid of hindrances, joyful, and confident he explained the special teaching of the Buddhas:
Yadā bhagavā aññāsi brāhmaṇaṁ pokkharasātiṁ kallacittaṁ muducittaṁ vinīvaraṇacittaṁ udaggacittaṁ pasannacittaṁ, atha yā buddhānaṁ sāmukkaṁsikā dhammadesanā, taṁ pakāsesi—

suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path.
dukkhaṁ samudayaṁ nirodhaṁ maggaṁ.

Hi Mike, oh it is DN 3, it was from an article about cāga so I assumed it was indeed from a section specifically on giving, maybe the author inferred it from the 4NT, anyways, thanks for pointing out the section I missed, will check the Sn reference now, on that link the Sn only went up to 200, how did you trace the numbering out of interest..?

the above website is a "PTS converter"; therefore does not appear to be particularly useful, unless you have the PTS suttas.

it is using the PTS numbering, in your case, PTS Snp 86

refer to photo below of Sutta Central Māghasutta Snp 3.5 PTS Snp 86

obviously the search engine above won't use the verse by verse numbering system because it is too numerous

the sutta is below:
“Yajassu yajamāno māghāti bhagavā,
Sabbattha ca vippasādehi cittaṁ;
Ārammaṇaṁ yajamānassa yañño,
Ettha patiṭṭhāya jahāti dosaṁ.

So vītarāgo pavineyya dosaṁ,
Mettaṁ cittaṁ bhāvayamappamāṇaṁ;
Rattindivaṁ satatamappamatto,
Sabbā disā pharati appamaññaṁ”.

Sn 3.5: Māḷa Sutta — Māgha {Sn 490-512}

The Buddha:

“Sacrifice, and while sacrificing, Māgha,

said the Blessed One,

make your mind clear everywhere.

For one sacrificing, the sacrifice is the object,

the support.

Taking a stand there, he abandons faults.

He—devoid of passion, subduing aversion,

developing a mind of goodwill

immeasurable,

day & night, continually heedful—

should pervade all the directions

immeasurably.”

Verse 512 Buddha
Do you sacrifice! But during this sacrificial act,
make your mind happy all of the time;
for the sacrificiant, this sacrifice is the base,
established in this one is rid of all faults.

Verse 513 One with passions gone would other faults restrain,
developing boundless mettā-mind, in this,
continuously diligent by day and by night,
suffusing all directions boundlessly.

There is always an official executioner. If you try to take his place, It is like trying to be a master carpenter and cutting wood. If you try to cut wood like a master carpenter, you will only hurt your hand.

On sutta central you can click on "views" of a sutta and turn on PTS (or some other) numbering. It's a bit complicated.
SC 22 SC Verse 508 Those who Know here as really it is—
“This is the last, no more being to come”—
to them would a brahmin, on merit intent,
sacrifice at the right time and oblations bestow.

SC 23 SC Verse 509 The mindful in holy words learned, who in jhāna delight,
won to Awakening, the refuge of many,
to them would a brahmin, on merit intent,
sacrifice at the right time and oblations bestow.

SC 24 SC Verse 510 Māgha
My question truly was not in vain
for the Radiant has spoken of gift-worthy ones.
This indeed you Know as it really is,
for certainly this Dharma’s Known to you.

SC 25 SC Verse 511 One glad to comply with others’ requests,
a generous giver, one living at home,
a seeker of merit, desirer of merit,
who to others as sacrifice gives food and drink,
tell me, O Radiant, the success of such sacrifice.

SC 26 SC Verse 512 Buddha
Do you sacrifice! But during this sacrificial act,
make your mind happy all of the time;
for the sacrificiant, this sacrifice is the base,
established in this one is rid of all faults.

SC 27 SC Verse 513 One with passions gone would other faults restrain,
developing boundless mettā-mind, in this,
continuously diligent by day and by night,
suffusing all directions boundlessly.

SC 28 SC Verse 514 Māgha
Who can be cleansed, released and Awakened?
With what does the self to the Brahma-world go?
O Sage, when asked reply to me—one who doesn’t know—
for the Radiant I’ve seen with my eyes as Brahmā today
and it’s true that you’re the same as Brahmā for us.
In the Brahma-world,
how does one arise, O Refulgent One?

Then the Buddha taught him step by step, with
Ekamantaṁ nisinnassa kho brāhmaṇassa pokkharasātissa bhagavā anupubbiṁ kathaṁ kathesi,
2.21.2
a talk on giving, ethical conduct, and heaven.
seyyathidaṁ—dānakathaṁ sīlakathaṁ saggakathaṁ;

He explained the drawbacks of sensual pleasures, so sordid and corrupt, and the benefit of renunciation.
