the buddha rejected eternalism (and annihilationism)
i was really enjoying this talk from ajahn brahmali. he sounds wise.
I host a sutta discussion via Zoom Sundays at 11AM Chicago time — message me if you are interested
Re: the buddha rejected eternalism (and annihilationism)
in early buddhism, eternalism and annihilationism are two kinds of self-views (DN 1; Iti 49; SN 12.17; SN 44.10).
but in commentary buddhism, eternalism and annihilationism are two kinds of views related to life after death
while i didn't listen to any of the video, i imagine it is unlikely the monk is discussing Early Buddhism but, instead, the Commentary Doctrine of Buddhaghosa

There is always an official executioner. If you try to take his place, It is like trying to be a master carpenter and cutting wood. If you try to cut wood like a master carpenter, you will only hurt your hand.

Ajahn Brahmali is a wise monk indeed. His presentation of EBTs is very analytical and detailed.salayatananirodha wrote: ↑Thu Aug 26, 2021 5:58 am

Re: the buddha rejected eternalism (and annihilationism)
annihilation implies the afterlife!
holy hell…
Re: the buddha rejected eternalism (and annihilationism)
No. Annihilation implies a self that is annihilated, per the sutta definitions already quoted. Regards

while you're alive this doesn't happen very often
otherwise you would be annihilated
hence it would be difficult to continue living

I mean, who could possibly think this
annihilation only makes sense in terms of the afterlife
