Also, did you end up going to and ordaining at Wat Yan, how did it go? What is the daily routine and accomodation like?

Also are there usually enough vegetarian food options to get by on?
Aside from collecting alms etc, there is no routine. You make it yourself.

Accommodation is a basic platform.

Most food has animal products, but you could get by if needs be.

Thank you

What all does the ‘etc’ entail?

Is there compulsory group morning evening chanting, and if so at what times?

aprox. how long does the alms round take?

Does one have to keep valuables, passport, money etc at the wooden platform itself or is there some more secure arrangement?

Does it work out ok on the platform with rain and mosquitoes, specially at night?

Lastly - any info on when Thailand would open again for normal tourists?

Thank you:)

Thailand will be closed for a few more months for sure
For updates follow www.thaivisa.com/forums
Once opened, expect to have a hefty insurance policy to be able to come in (probably a vaccination cert. too)

A few other answers from this thread.

Few vegetarian dishes in Thailand...remember...you eat what ppl offer during pindapat
Food as far from the western palate as one can get
Language..very difficult. It will take a lot of dedication to be able to speak read and write.
10 years minimum.
Obviously, a translator app in your smartphone will make things way easier these days

Most monks in temples are not there for the Dharma
Old men w/o family see it as a retirement option...unemployable younger men as a place w/free food/bed..wats have also a 'gay' reputation
Others go there for the money perks...busy wats have a lot of income that is distributed among the monks

If you choose a thai-only wat (assuming you will be accepted, a big if) don't expect to be welcomed.
Thailand is NOT a welcoming country contrary to what most ppl think.
I have visited countless temples and have rarely been accosted/welcomed my monks.
..and no, I'm not a tottering behemoth coverd in tattoos
