Garlic and Onion in diet?

Garlic and Onion is not allowed for monks or allowed?

if not allowed, it is because.. 1) it cause bad smell in mouth while dhamma talk?
2) increase sex related hormones?
3) it has decrease life span effect?

For lay person. what is the role of garlic and onion? should it be avoided or not? Brahmins dont eat garlic and onion for the above reasons.. what is buddha view on this?

That is no contradiction. Bad smelling farts may obstruct attainment of jhanas if hindrances are caused.

It's allowed. The only prohibition really is just eating the garlic by itself. The prohibition against the "five pungent spices" is a Mahayana prohibition.

Now at that time the Lord, surrounded by a large assembly, was teaching dhamma sitting down. A certain monk had eaten garlic; he sat down to one side, thinking: “In case the monks are incommoded.” The Lord saw that monk who was sitting down at one side; seeing him, he addressed the monks, saying: “Monks, why is this monk sitting to one side?”

“Lord, this monk has eaten garlic, so he sat down at one side, thinking: ‘In case the monks are incommoded’.”

According to current medical knowledge, it also helps prevent high blood
cholesterol. Although Asian food often contains garlic as an ingredient,
none of the texts mention the use of garlic mixed in with food. Perhaps it
is allowable on the grounds of being a digestive aid. An alternative
interpretation, accepted by many Communities, is that the original
prohibition is against eating garlic by itself. Following this interpretation,
garlic mixed with other ingredients would be allowable even when one is
not ill.

oh, ok. i didn't see that's what was being said. i don't know enough about pranic foods to say, but it might not be completely unrelated to dhammavinaya. someone with more knowledge should say.
