What is the origin of "Pirith Potha"?

Post by SarathW »

What is the origin of "Pirith Potha"?

There is a book called "Pirith Potha" in Sri Lanka.
What is the origin of this?
Is three a free resource in the net?
What is the origin of "Jaya Piritha"?
Was the "Pirith Potha" compiled from Tipitaka?

The reason I raise this question was, that there is a belief in Sri Lanka that chanting Pirith has many benefits such as increase your wealth and free from diseases name a few.

Maybe is it originated from Abhayagiri Vihara lineage ? I remember when I read Mahavamsa and Culavamsa, once the evil Sri Lankan King despised Mahaviharavins and Abhayagiri sect was flourished. They seemed to introduce a lot of rite and rituals to the common people....

But I do think this practice partially originated from both Suttas and Buddhavamsa. For example, Karaniyametta sutta was frequently chanted to appease the native spirits and radiate loving-kindness to all living beings (Like the sutta story of 500 monks that encounter maleficent Tree Spirits). Angulimala Paritta was used as a sacred stanza to bless pregnant women (even in the Angulimala sutta, Buddha encouraged Angulimala Thera to utter the stanza). In Buddhavamsa, Dhajjaga Sutta was encouraged to recite often, said it can boost one's intelligence and confidence.

I was listening to a Czech Republic monk named Ashin Sarana.
The video is in Sinahalease so I did not post it here.
He Said some of the chanting we practice is not from the Sutta.
He urges Sri Lankan to use the Tipitaka-based chanting instead of some alien chanting.

By the way here that monk is talking about Theravada vs Mahayana.
