Calling all Coders!! Digital Pāli Tools are in development

Post by digitalpalitools »

Hello from the Digital Pāli Tools team!

My name is Max and I am a volunteer with the DPT team (http://d.pali.tools). We are the team currently working on the latest versions of the Digital Pāli Reader (http://digitalpalireader.online), originally created by Bhante Yuttadhammo Bhikkhu. Digital Pāli Tools is a collaboration between Pāli experts and coders to create powerful tools for reading, learning, and understanding the Pāli texts. We are happy to be on Dhamma Wheel to be able to share the things we have been working on for the benefit of anyone interested.

If you are a coder interested in helping with the projects, contact [email protected] or join the Discord: https://discord.gg/4yprXfKsna

Developments in progress:

1. Enhancing the Digital Pāli Reader, used worldwide by academics, monastics, and meditators for immersive study of the Pāli texts.

Future developments:

2. Developing a Digital Pāli Dictionary with detailed grammatical and context-based examples, which automatically recognizes Pāli word inflections.

3. A sandhi splitter to recognize and split the multitude of sandhi compounds found in the texts.

4. Natural Language Processing to bring the power of artificial intelligence to understanding Pāli.

Hello

At the moment, Sujato's translations on Sutta Central, where line for line Pali can be included & looked up the dictionaries, appear to be supremely useful, particularly for those, such as myself, who have a tiny knowledge of Pali. At least, for me, Sutta Central is the most valuable learning asset I have never used. How will you improve on Sutta Central? Thanks :thanks:
There is always an official executioner. If you try to take his place, It is like trying to be a master carpenter and cutting wood. If you try to cut wood like a master carpenter, you will only hurt your hand.

The above can be useful however it will be most useful if it can also show every contextual use of a word in the suttas.

To do this, i imagine: (i) every use of a word a sutta must be located; and (ii) every context distinguished.

I have already done such research/studies for certain words. This actually is the only true way to understand the Teachings.

Sutta Central is a great tool, and the Digital Pali Reader does not intend to replace it or improve upon it. While there is some overlap between the two tools, SC and DPR primarily do different things and serve their own specific use cases. For example, the DPR provides easier access to multiple dictionaries and analysis tools as you are reading the Pali texts, and can perform certain searches that SC cannot. However, the DPR does not offer as wide a variety of translators, languages, or rich comparison opportunities with parallel texts. Using SC and DPR in tandem can be powerful.

Yes, good point. This is precisely the method used to compile the new Digital Pali Dictionary, word by word, context by context.
