The 16 steps of anapanasati lead to both concentration and insight.
Do everything with a mind that lets go. Do not expect any praise or reward. If you let go a little, you experience a little peace. If you let go a lot, you experience a lot of peace. If you let go completely, you will know complete peace and freedom. Your struggle with the world will have come to an end.

Right, think of Samatha and Vipassana as specifications while Anapanasati is an implementation that can work for both (1st to 3rd tetrads for Samatha, 4th tetrad for Vipassana). Samatha can use various different subjects other than the breath, like the kasinas, the Three Jewels, the Brahmaviharas, etc. ( a total of 40 meditation subjects ).ShanYin wrote:Maybe just the difference is that Anapanasati means always a meditation on the breath, while Samatha can be on a flame or on a visualization ?]
Webu Sayadaw said Anapana sati is suffcient for Vipassana. Perhaps he smoothly segued from Samatha To Vipassana. Anapana sati > Samatha > Vipassana. It's the still mind, attained by practicing anapana meditation, that is capable of insight meditation.
Is Samatha a state of mind? I think I have been in a special state of mind through focusing on breathing but I do not think it was Samadhi or Jhana.
Samadhi, Samantha is a focused, concentrated, still, calm mind. The continual return of the wandering mind to the object of meditation (in and out breathing) in time stops the wandering and the mind is easily fixed on the object of meditation. The more samatha, the less wandering, distracted mind.
