mindfulness meditation takes only the first part "when this exists" - when breathing in(avijja/you don't know yet that you breath)https://suttacentral.net/an10.92/en/sujato wrote:And what is the noble cycle that they have clearly seen and comprehended with wisdom?Katamo cassa ariyo ñāyo paññāya sudiṭṭho hoti suppaṭividdho?It’s when a noble disciple reflects:Idha, gahapati, ariyasāvako iti paṭisañcikkhati:
‘When this exists, that is; due to the arising of this, that arises.‘iti imasmiṃ sati idaṃ hoti; imassuppādā idaṃ uppajjati;
When this doesn’t exist, that is not; due to the cessation of this, that ceases. That is:imasmiṃ asati idaṃ na hoti; imassa nirodhā idaṃ nirujjhati, yadidaṃ—

i think it makes sense why it is called development, it develops the other half "that is" - i'm breathing in(saṅkhāra)https://suttacentral.net/mn119/en/sujato wrote: When breathing in heavily they know: ‘I’m breathing in heavily.’ When breathing out heavily they know: ‘I’m breathing out heavily.’dīghaṃ vā assasanto ‘dīghaṃ assasāmī’ti pajānāti, dīghaṃ vā passasanto ‘dīghaṃ passasāmī’ti pajānāti;

What can be known : aware of space.. it can know ayatana of space...
if mind is immersed in samadhi, dhamma becomes clear. It think it refer to purified manovinnana released from the 5 senses.https://suttacentral.net/mn43/en/sujato wrote:“What can be known by purified mind consciousness released from the five senses?”“Nissaṭṭhena hāvuso, pañcahi indriyehi parisuddhena manoviññāṇena kiṃ neyyan”ti?
“Aware that ‘space is infinite’ it can know the dimension of infinite space. Aware that ‘consciousness is infinite’ it can know the dimension of infinite consciousness. Aware that ‘there is nothing at all’ it can know the dimension of nothingness.”“Nissaṭṭhena, āvuso, pañcahi indriyehi parisuddhena manoviññāṇena ‘ananto ākāso’ti ākāsānañcāyatanaṃ neyyaṃ, ‘anantaṃ viññāṇan’ti viññāṇañcāyatanaṃ neyyaṃ, ‘natthi kiñcī’ti ākiñcaññāyatanaṃ neyyan”ti.
the 4th corner of satipathana is about dhamma.https://suttacentral.net/sn55.40/en/sujato wrote:When the mind is immersed in samādhi, principles become clear.Samāhite citte dhammā pātubhavanti.
dhamma is what is known(i am) and is known by the wisdom eye
i propose that the infamous "being aware of being aware" is referring to the eye of wisdom.“How do you understand something that can be known?”“Neyyaṃ panāvuso, dhammaṃ kena pajānātī”ti?
“You understand something that can be known with the eye of wisdom.”“Neyyaṃ kho, āvuso, dhammaṃ paññācakkhunā pajānātī”ti.
being aware of being aware of something is pretty direct to me in my opinion and when to cultivate it results in complete wisdom and being able to give up(which i think refer to the object coming 3D in a sense field as wisdom penetrates also behind the object).“What is the purpose of wisdom?”“Paññā panāvuso, kimatthiyā”ti?
“The purpose of wisdom is direct knowledge, complete understanding, and giving up.”“Paññā kho, āvuso, abhiññatthā pariññatthā pahānatthā”ti.
Thus in case of breath object the breath nimitta arises.
